Sen. Reid, Tell us Where Saddam’s Yellowcake WENT

Sen. Harry Reid’s speech yesterday on the Senate floor was an effort to get voters’ attention for Democrats’ pre-planned scheme demanding, that “the Senate go into closed session” to demand an investigation about investigations the Democrats want to further their political agenda. That agenda is based in large part on the notion that President Bush lied about the “threat” posed by Saddam Hussein and his nuclear ambitions and his habit of invading other nations.
Reid, in a statement in defense of Saddam Hussein yesterday stated:
“There are numerous examples of how the administration misstated, and manipulated the facts as it made the case for war. The administration's statements on Saddam's alleged nuclear weapons capability and ties with al-Qaida represent the best examples of how it consistently and repeatedly manipulated the facts. The American people were warned time and time again by the President, the Vice President, the current Secretary of State in her other capacities, about Saddam's nuclear weapons capabilities. The Vice President said: ‘Iraq has reconstituted its nuclear programs.’
“Playing upon the fears of Americans after September 11, these officials and others raised the specter that if left unchecked Saddam could soon attack America with nuclear weapons. Obviously, we know now that their nuclear claims were wholly inaccurate. But more troubling is the fact that a lot of intelligence experts were telling the administration then that its claims about Saddam's nuclear capabilities were false--the situation very similar with respect to Saddam's links to al-Qaida. The Vice President told the American people: ‘We know he's out trying once again to produce nuclear weapons and we know he has a longstanding relationship with various terrorist groups including the al-Qaida organization.’
“These assertions have been totally discredited--not a little bit, totally discredited. But again the administration went ahead with these assertions in spite of the fact that the Government's top experts did not agree with these claims.”
Only – not all the “top experts” agreed with those who claimed Saddam had abandoned his nuclear weapons program and Reid strangely did not even mention the problem – a major problem – that faced the American troops when Baghdad was liberated – the problem of the highly radioactive barrels that Iraqis living near the Tuwaitha nuclear facility near Bahgdad that poor and ignorant Iraqi farmers had stolen to use as water barrels. The Tuwaitha plant provided the research and plans for Saddam’s Osirak nuclear facility, a 40 megawatt light water nuclear materials testing reactor. The Osirak plant was bombed by the Israelis in 1981, to the dismay of the French who sold it to Saddam and the United Nations who passed a resolution scolding the Irsraelis.
After Saddam seized Kuwait in 1990, the plant was totally destroyed totally by US bombers in Desert Storm in1991. Twelve years later, in 2003, after playing games with the UN nuclear weapons inspectors for many years, we find that again the Tuwaitha plant has empty barrels that are highly radioactive – but the yellowcake was not found.
Sen. Reid criticized Vice President Cheney for saying: “We know he's (Saddam Hussein) out trying once again to produce nuclear weapons and we know he has a longstanding relationship with various terrorist groups including the al-Qaida organization. “ Reid stated yesterday: “These assertions have been totally discredited--not a little bit, totally discredited. But again the administration went ahead with these assertions in spite of the fact that the Government's top experts did not agree with these claims.”
Really? WHAT government “experts” have “totally discredited” al-Qaida’s foothold in Iraq and Saddam Hussein’s nuclear and biological weapons programs? We know he had biological weapons since he used them on both the Kurds and the Shiites and there was evidence of the existence of chemical weapons in 1991 when the Marines seized the Emir’s farm which had been used as an ammunitions storage area during Desert Storm. The chemical weapons’ warning signals on the Marines’ vehicles went off so often on their march to Kuwait City that they lost count.
If al-Qaida had no foothold in Iraq, how come Osama bin Laden’s #2 in command, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi told the world that two of his men, Salem Sa'ed Salem bin Suweid and Yasser Fathi Ibraheem assassinated America’s Ambassador to Jordon, Lawrence Foley, on October 28, 2002? Before our troops moved into Iraq, on February 2, 2003, Ambassador Foley was assassinated in Jordan. In a peech to the UN Secretary of State Colin Powell identified Zarqawi by name and warned the world about the “nexus between Iraq and the al-Qaida terrorist network, a nexus that combines classic terrorist organizations and modern methods of murder. Iraq today harbors a deadly terrorist network headed by Abu Massad Al-Zarqawi an associate and collaborator of Usama bin Laden and his al-Qaida lieutenants.” Among those “methods” was Zarqawi’s expertise in “poisons” and explosive training.”
In June of 2003, three months after the fall of Saddam Hussein, the environmentalist organization, Greenpeace, reported, with pictures, a story on this situation – of course blaming the Bush Administration for not doing more the defend the Iraqis. According to the story,
“A small Greenpeace radiation sampling team has been working in the community living near the Tuwaitha nuclear facility for only two weeks and has already uncovered frightening levels of radioactivity there, including:
· a huge "yellow cake" mixing canister, with approximately 4- 5 kilos of uranium inside, abandoned on open ground near a village, which the team returned to the US radiation experts inside Tuwaitha plant
· radioactivity in a series of houses, including one source measuring 10,000 times above normal
· another source outside a 900 pupil primary school measuring 3,000 times above normal
· locals who are still storing radioactive barrels and lids in their houses
· another smaller radioactive source abandoned in a nearby field
· several objects carrying radioactive symbols discarded in the community
· consistent and repeated stories of unusual sickness after coming into contact with material from the Tuwaitha plant”
While Sen. Reid is claiming that President Bush was lying about Saddam Having yellowcake or trying to get it from Niger, Greenpeace is criticizing Bush for not doing more to protect Iraqis from radiation due to them using barrels that had STORED yellowcake for water containers. We have never been told exactly what was IN all those trucks that the Israelis photographed going into Syria from Iraq, prior to March 2003 or WHERE the yellowcake that had been stored in those barrels went.
Perhaps we SHOULD have an investigation. I’d like someone to get Senator Reid and his “experts” to tell us where Saddam PUT all the yellowcake that was in those empty barrels at Tuwaitha, since he is so sure that Saddam is totally innocent of trying to make weapons out of it.
