House Vote on Troop Withdrawal Shows Growing SUPPORT for Bush’s Iraq Policy
By Mary Mostert (11/19/05)
Last night about 8:00 PM the House of Representatives began debating Resolution 572 which challenged the Democrats to actually VOTE on their constant demands that we pull our troops out of Iraq. The previous day, Democrat John Murtha of Pennsylvania claimed that our troops were the real problem in Iraq. He stated:
“Our troops have become the primary target of the insurgency. They are united against U.S. forces and we have become a catalyst for violence. U.S. troops are the common enemy of the Sunnis, Saddamists and foreign jihadists. I believe with a U.S. troop redeployment, the Iraqi security forces will be incentivized to take control. A poll recently conducted shows that over 80% of Iraqis are strongly opposed to the presence of coalition troops, and about 45% of the Iraqi population believe attacks against American troops are justified. I believe we need to turn Iraq over to the Iraqis.”
Murtha didn’t identify the poll or who took it, but Murtha ended his statement with:
“Our military has done everything that has been asked of them, the U.S. can not accomplish anything further in Iraq militarily. IT IS TIME TO BRING THEM HOME.”
That challenge was taken up last night in H. Res 571, a resolution introduced by Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican. Hunter on March 20, 2003 introduced Resolution 83 in Congress in support of President Bush sending American Troops in Iraq. That resolution was passed 392-11 with 22 not voting. The eleven voting against sending troops to Iraq were :John Conyers (MI), Mike Honda, (Ca), Stephanie Jones (Oh), Barbara Lee (Ca), Jim McDermott (Wa), Charles Rangel (NY) , Bobby Scott (VA) Fortney Stark (Ca), Edolphus Towns (NY), Maxine Waters (Ca), Diane Watson (Ca).
The resolution Hunter introduced last night called on members of Congress to actually VOTE to express “the sense of the House of Representatives that the deployment of United States forces in Iraq be terminated immediately.” In other words, Hunter challenged Murtha, the media and others who tell us that Bush has lost the support of the people concerning the war in Iraq, to let us know the extent of that sentiment among members of Congress, who were elected a year ago.
That was the scenario that prompted the NY Times to report in its lead story “Uproar in House as Parties Clash on Iraq Pullout.” What really caused the Democrats to boil over was when Representative Jean Schmidt, an Ohio Republican who is the most junior member of the House, told of a phone call she had just received from a Marine colonel back home.
"He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course," Ms. Schmidt said. "He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: that cowards cut and run, Marines never do. Democrats booed in protest and shouted Ms. Schmidt down.”
Of course, you won’t read it in the New York Times or hear it on network news, but the motion forced the hand of those in congress and those around the country who are trying to destroy President Bush with claims that somehow it was Bush, not those terrorists, who is responsible for the destruction of the World Trade Center, the deaths and discomfort of the Iraqi people, the reason terrorists become terrorists, and even global warming and the flooding of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.
It was only a year ago, in November 2004, that we had a national presidential election that was largely a referendum on John Kerry’s cut and run agenda, which he also advocated for Vietnam, and George W. Bush’s fight and win the war on terrorism agenda. Bush’s victory was a shock to those who supported the cut and run agenda. They are now talking about “impeaching” the President because, they claim, he “lied” about Saddam Hussein having weapons of mass destruction, about the “REAL CAUSES” of the collapse of the World Trade Center, etc., etc, - as an “excuse” to go to war.
So, at the end of the day – how DID the House of Representatives, the elected voice of the people of the United States of America, VOTE on Congressman Hunter’s resolution? How many members of Congress, last night, supported the Bush Bashing, withdraw from Iraq agenda?
The vote AGAINST the resolution “that the deployment of United States forces in Iraq be terminated immediately” at 11:33 PM last night was 403-3. Only three of the cut and run members of congress were willing to put their vote where their mouths have been. They were Cynthia McKinney, (D-Georgia) Jose Serrano (D-New York) and Robert Wexler. (D-Florida)
Not even John Murtha voted for his own idea – when it came right down to having to put up or shut up. On November 17, 2005 he said of our troops :IT IS TIME TO BRING THEM HOME. On November 18, 2005 he voted against the immediate withdrawal of our troops from Iraq.
In 2003 there were 11 votes against Bush’s policy and in 2005 there were only 3 votes in the House against his policy. That appears to me to be about a 78% decrease in the members of Congress willing to actually DO what they keep telling us needs to be done – to get out of Iraq.
I can just imagine how the N.Y. Times would have reported the story had there been a 78% INCREASE in the votes to withdraw our troops from Iraq.
