Why Can't the Left Tolerate Christmas?
By Doug Hagin (12/22/05)
Tolerance is a word, which is used repeatedly in today’s America. We hear each and every day about different Americans, groups, religions, and races seeking this ultra-harmonious thing called tolerance.
It is safe to say, most would agree, that it is the political left that talks the most about tolerance. So why is it that the folks doing most of the jawing about tolerance, Liberals, tend to be the most intolerant of differing views?
Yes, yes, most assuredly Liberals reading will insist I am being grossly unfair to them. They will accuse me of generalizing, and in truth, that is exactly what I am doing. Generally speaking it IS, indeed the left, and not the right, that is intolerant of opposing views.
Now this is certainly not to say all of those on the left are intolerant, or that all those on the right are tolerant. Generally, though, the evidence is very clear. A perfect illustration is the cu! rrent war against Christmas. It is the left and not the right, which is perpetrating this campaign of holiday cleansing. Again, not to say all Liberals hate or want to erase Christmas, but find me a person offended over Christmas and I will bet you they are on the left and not the right.
The overwhelming majority of Americans celebrate Christmas. We put up trees, Christmas trees, not holiday trees, or world trees, or giving trees, but Christmas trees! We decorate our homes, offices, stores. We host and attend parties, eat, drink, exchange gifts and revel in the season that is Christmas.
These are good things my friends. There surely is nothing bad or evil in giving a gift is there? There certainly is no harm in decorating our yards and homes is there? Yes, we likely eat too much; we might spend a little much. Heck, sometimes we even have been known to drink a wee bit too much eggnog. But really now, how does that hurt anyone who might not celebrate Christmas? ! A quick word of warning to Americans, Decorating while partaking in spirits can be very bad, as my Uncle Earl knows. He tried putting Santa’s sled and reindeer on the roof with Jim Beam’s help one year. Not a good ending there.
Back to the point though, what do those so offended over Christmas get out of trying to ruin something they do not even celebrate? Does this make any sense to anyone? So some very direct and serious questions for those who lose their minds every year at this time.
How in the world does hearing Merry Christmas hurt you? If you do not celebrate it, fine, that is your business. Really though, why do you feel a need to contact the ACLU every time anyone wishes you this salutation? You do realize Merry Christmas is a good thing don’t you? It is not as if someone is telling you to jump off a cliff. Try this approach, instead of freaking out and screaming like a loon, just say thanks and be glad they care enough to say it.
Anoth! er question for the grinches out there. How does seeing a Christmas tree or nativity scene or Santa Claus harm you? Moreover, spare me the “separation of church and state” inanity. That argument is old, tired and completely bogus frankly. You do not have any right NOT to see Christmas decorations. Your feelings are not mentioned in the United States Constitution either. So really now, how do these symbols cause you harm? Do you suffer from Santaitis? Maybe Nativity phobia or perhaps a fear of evergreen trees with lights?
Again, the point must be made. If you do not celebrate Christmas that is your business, but really now why are you so intent on shoving your values down everyone else’s throats?
Yes, that is exactly what you grinches are doing. Every time you protest a decorated courthouse lawn, or city park, or a server or sales person who greets you with “Merry Christmas” you are attempting to impose your will upon them and every other American who l! oves this holiday. Sorry to be so blunt but you desperately need to hear the truth. Isn’t it time you were at least as tolerant as you demand everyone else be?
While you hold the right to live your life as you choose, you do not hold the right, either legal or moral, to force your way upon others. Your version of tolerance is not tolerance at all. It is hatred and petty bitterness and that is just sad frankly.
True tolerance is accepting that others are different from you and allowing them to be. True tolerance is about being able to allow those of different thought, ideals, traditions and faiths do their thing. So why is it that the anti-Christmas brigades, who are almost entirely on the left, do not practice the very tolerance they preach?
How can a “tolerant” person look upon this season and not at least hold a deep appreciation for the joy of others? How can they, at the very least, be willing to let those celebrating Christmas have their trad! itions?
Why can’t they just go their own way? Is it really that difficult to just mind their own business? Frankly, it is getting pretty tough to tolerate their intolerance.
