Mr Locke's letter: British National Party
By Letters To The Editor Andrew Williams (02/05/06)
Sir,
As the Andrew Williams mentioned in Mr Locke's letter, I would like to take him up on his gallant offer to denounce the BNP if they are proven unrestructured and the proof will be forwarded to your journal in the next month or so. In the meantime, your readers are encouraged to visit http://stopthebnp.com/ for all the latest UK local, regional and national press coverage concerning this odious group of lumpen
As Mr Locke is no doubt aware, Nick Griffin - BNP chairman, and Mark Collett, a senior BNP activist, have recently been tried at Crown Court for 'Incitement To Racial Hatred'. Whilst it is true to say that they were found Not Guilty on 2 charges each, it is also true to say that they will be facing re-trial for the other charges - making public comments such as "asylum seekers are cockroaches" (Collett) and " Show them the door in 2004".
This is not America. There is no right to unrestricted freedom of speech here. Rather you have freedom of speech so long as you do not offend minorities. We in this country quite rightly have a proud tradition of 'protecting' minorities - of ethnic, racial, religious, political, sexual and gender persuasions and long may it continue. Why do you think Karl Marx is buried here?
As for the BNP, Griffin & Collett's trial aside, it is falling apart as a result of internal fueding, public exposes on senior figures, and arrests and charges for domestic violence, fraud etc etc. and is fast returning to it's origins - a lunatic fringe group to be ignored and never to be taken seriously.
Rather fitting and very amusing really.
Andrew Williams
