Re: Andrew Williams's letter about the BNP
By Letters To The Editor Andrew Sim (02/05/06)
Dear Sir,
Andrew Williams's absurd and half-baked letter about the BNP cannot go unchallenged. Firstly, major factual errors. There is, as yet, no official re-trial. The CPS cannot order a re-trial. Period. They can request one and it can be granted after consultation with the trial judge and the Attorney General on the balance of likelihood of securing a conviction.
Given that the Attorney General is a new Labour appointee and that this prosecution is politically convenient for Blair, there may well be a re-trial, but this is no certainty.
Secondly, the website quoted by Mr Williams as a reliable source of information (stop the bnp.com) is a biased, deeply flawed front for 'Searchlight' - the so-called anti-fascist organisation and is crammed with intentionally destabilising propaganda. It is thus no more reliable as a source of objective information about the BNP than the BNP's own website!
Mr Williams further claims that the party is imploding. In fact, the trial has demonstrably given the party a huge boost. Alexa.com - the online traffic measurer - already had the BNP's site as the most popular of all British political parties. Since the trial, traffic has surged to unprecedented levels, putting the site into the top 10,000 worldwide. This is verifiable fact not speculation. Also, the only possible alternative contender for Nick Griffin's chairmanship was its former leader, John Tyndall, who has recently died.
Yours sincerely
Andrew Sim
