Burning Bush in a Georgia Church

Somebody owes President Bush an apology. While honoring the life of Coretta Scott King at a memorial service in an Atlanta church, the President took political shots from Joseph Lowry, the co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and then from former President Jimmy Carter. The President was seated a few feet behind these men while they railed at him from a pulpit.
The New Birth Baptist Church was the scene of this “Christian on Christian” crime. Perhaps it should be head pastor Eddie Long who should issue a public apology. In fact, it is his duty to do so. To allow so-called “men of God” to use his pulpit to attack an anointed servant, who cannot and should not defend himself in such a setting, is an abomination.
Pastor Long could have set an example by stopping these men in their tracks; an example worthy of the woman they were supposedly honoring. Yes, Pastor Long could have taken the pulpit away from Lowry the moment he uttered disparaging words against the man who is defending this nation against her enemies. He could have done that in front of the charlatans of the faith, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. He could have done that in front of a mostly black congregation that mindlessly applauded the hateful and incendiary comments. He could have done that in front a new generation of young black men who yearn for decent and honest leadership.
It is an absolute disgrace to treat with such disdain a man who has nothing but love in his heart for this country and her people. And to do it in front of his wife? In a non-political setting? Carter mentioned the “black” victims of Hurricane Katrina and how their government doesn’t care about them. So Carter now takes his lead from brain-dead rap artists?
Is there anyone in this Christian church who takes their lead from the Spirit? Is so, prove it by calling the President back and giving him the respect he is due.
