Zip it up, Willie

Willie Nelson records “gay cowboy” song. That’s what the headline said a few days ago. When I went to look for the story again today, I found it at an Australian newspaper under the headline, Willie’s gay cowboy homage. The Sydney Morning Herald had the story in the music section. I guess that’s where it belongs. The question now is where does Mr. Nelson belong and what are country music fans going to say to Willie since he’s added to the chorus that’s demeaning to cowboys? The answer, “Zip it up, Willie.”
Personally, I’ve never cared for Willie Nelson. I had the unfortunate opportunity to see him act in the Dukes of Hazard movie recently. Of course, he was playing himself off has a good old boy – in fact, in one scene, he connected with a right hand to Burt Reynolds jaw – a real “cowboy up” moment. Now, I guess, Willie’s more in the mood to Act Up!
Homosexuals are the crown jewel of Hollywood. In most movies, everyone’s best friend is gay. Of course, the lead character never is. That has changed now with the unveiling of Brokeback Mountain. Two of America’s favorite “hunks” decided the time was right to play roles in which they “hunker down” with each other in some lonely brush country. I’m not so sure that those two actors will want their real fan base to keep the images of them playing these characters embedded in their minds. Didn’t Ledger have a movie called Casanova come out at the end of last year? Nobody went to see it, right?
Anyway, Willie Nelson needs to record a song real fast to salvage his image with the NASCAR and western wear crowd. The lyrics could go something like this:
Working man, scratching out a living; Never taking, always giving, and the hours are always too many. That’s a working man. What has the world done for you? If the answer is nothing, You’re a man’s man; A good woman’s too. And you’re not looking for much, just the open air; When asked how you’re doing, we always hear, “working man.”
