The Abortion Debate
By Rob Hood (03/01/06)
In the last few days many of us have read about or at least heard about South Dakota's Abortion Ban. Many thought that when states began to introduce legislation like this, conservatives would stand up and push it through, but so far this has not been the case in South Dakota. Some conservatives have spoken out against this simply because they do not believe the time is right for the Supreme Court to rule in favor of States' rights in cases like this. There are at least two more conservative judges needed to overturn the damage done by the left's choices of past judges.
Mississippi may be next. For years, Mississippians have wanted an abortion free state and most abortion clinics have been shut down in Mississippi. Only one remains and I personally believe that it is only a matter of time before that one disappears as well. Abortion clinics in my home state of Mississippi have a severe amount of public outcry against them. The one remaining clinic faces almost daily protests and prayer vigils held outside the clinic. I consider myself a conservative pro-lifer and would not mind seeing the clinic slow down its operations of abortions on demand.
The proposed abortion ban of Mississippi would exclude cases of rape, incest, or a imminent danger to the life of the mother. I know that these exclusions already apply but are heavily abused, twisted, and manipulated in order for those who lack personal responsibility to get a free ride from taking care of their illegitimate children. They call it abortion and normal people call it murder. The number of abortions due to extra-marital sex greatly outnumbers legitimate reasons like rape, incest, or life threatening situations. The number one cause of women wanting an abortion is that they cannot or will not say "NO" to sex outside of marriage. When sex outside of a covenant Biblical marriage relationship occurs and the woman gets pregnant they usually go with two choices:get married or have an abortion. The whole thing could be prevented by practicing abstinence before marriage.
People on the left side of the political spectrum like to blame religious leaders for not supporting condom distribution or the "morning after" pill, but condoms and pills would not be needed if abstinence was practiced and it would dramatically reduce STDs. I see no cons here, only pros. If men and women truly love each other and respect themselves and each other and really are Christian they'll wait until marriage and an abortion is not needed.
What about rape you ask. Rape is a subject that is hard to discuss concerning abortion. The child inside the mother's womb still has a soul given by God and God still has a plan for that child no matter how it was conceived. That's why conservative Christians believe abortion is wrong. Abortion consists of the taking of an innocent unborn life to benefit the living born life and that is just not fair at all. Incest? That's gross and evil but it happens. Perhaps abortion in this situation should be allowed, I don't really know. That's a tough choice to make. Life threatening illness? If a mother has a situation where she will absolutely without a shadow of a doubt die due to complications with a pregnancy, then abortion may be legal in my book, but sexual lust and irresponsibility is out of the question. Idf one is responsible enough to have a sexual relationship outside marriage, then they are responsible enough to take care of that child as well.
If Mississippi does pick up similar legislation as South Dakota, other states may follow. That may be enough to prompt the Supreme Court to look at the issue of abortion and states' rights in a whole different manner. It would definitely be a great step in winning the culture war.
