MA - Athol Republican mounts challenge to Rep. Donelan

Republican Bob Parks wants to be the next member of the state House of Representatives for the Greenfield-Orange area. If elected in November he intends to work toward a more self-sufficient and business-friendly community.
The former Republican congressional candidate for the 24th district in California is a Navy veteran, single father, and graphic designer and television producer. He said he would take a more proactive approach to improving the economy in the 2nd Franklin District, which stretches from Greenfield to Orange.
"I think that we out here in our district need someone who will be a little more proactive and not rubber stamp initiatives and benefit Boston first," Parks said. "And, I say this as someone that was born in Boston."
Parks will be running against incumbent Rep. Christopher Donelan, D-Orange, who started his term in 2003 when he ventured beyond local politics. Donelan, formerly on the Mahar Regional School Committee, holds an master's degree from the American International College.
Currently the production manager at the local cable station AOTV in Athol, Parks previously worked as a graphic designer at Fox television network in Los Angeles. Parks said he made the decision to run two years ago when he heard the Tyco Corp. plant in Westminster was closing its doors, losing hundreds of jobs for the area.
"It reminded me of an instance that happened in L.A.," he said.
Parks explained that one day, while taking his kids to the mall, he had to re-route because a major street was blocked off. He learned later that evening, he said, that several politicians were going to a plant to try to save 1,600 jobs from being liquidated by the Boeing Co. 'The street was blocked for city councilors, congressmen and President Bill Clinton to visit the plant. "They went to lobby to save those jobs," Parks said. "That area was politically competitive. When politicians feel that they may lose their jobs, all of a sudden everything is an emergency and they get. involved."
Parks believes compromises can be made to keep businesses from leaving an area. He said businesses leave most of the time because they are lured from the area by incentives such as tax breaks.
Economic development is the backbone of Parks' campaign, he said, and he wants to make the area economically self-sufficient.
He sees Democratic control of Beacon Hill as a major issue in reaching his political goals.
"The fact that right now Massachusetts democrats control Beacon Hill, most of the attention of the legislators seems to go toward Boston interests, " he said. "Meanwhile, it would appear the western half of the state has been neglected when it comes to infrastructure, job growth and creation, and educational needs."
"Cuts in education are because Democrats authorize them and for Democrats to blame Republicans and the governor for budget cuts is an insult to Republicans and the electorate," he said.
Parks attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where he was a graphic design major and Suffolk University, where he studied journalism.
After working for the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a promotion assistant, he entered the Navy and served aboard the carrier USS Midway in the Western Pacific for near four years as a print and broadcast journalist. Honorably discharged in 1989, he relocated to Los Angeles where he worked for Fox Broadcasting as a graphic artist. While at Fox, he also performed freelance graphic design for a number of Hollywood companies.
He spent more than a decade in southern California, and returned to Massachusetts in 2003. He now lives in Athol.

The United States Is Being Overthrown By Our Politicians - "A silent but all-reaching coup is taking place within the
United States. This coup is not being directed by bomb-laden Muslim terrorists, nor will it ever be covered by the mainstream media.
The seditious act is being carried out by our very own elected officials, with President Bush leading the insurrection."
"The FDA has conveniently used the excuse of looking out for consumer safety to increase their perverse regulatory power,
undermine free speech, disrupt commerce, and generally get in the way of helping people improve their health. The "half-truth" of
the safety issue is used as a ploy to reduce the rights of Americans, one freedom at a time. Once again, the FDA is seeking more
police power to intimidate supplement companies. This is one step in an overall FDA master plan to eliminate therapeutic nutritional
supplements from the free market. Those who lose are the American public." The FDA - A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
