What Happens When The Church Stops Believing in God
By Rob Hood (03/25/06)
Not too long ago I received a letter from Answers in Genesis, a creation ministry in which I am a supporter. Now I knew that there were those out there that did not believe the Genesis account of creation, but instead believed in evolution. No one says that we have to believe in a certain thing because we are a free country that has the right to express whatever belief we have. However, church is different. Sure freedom of expression is there too, but I would have never believed what I read next in that letter.
On February 12, 2006, over 400 congregations in 49 states participated in the 197th anniversary of Darwin. Some congregations passed out materials written by Dr. Eugenie Scott, an atheist of all people. What was an atheist doing leading church congregations on a day like this? It was reported that 10,250 clergy signed a letter called The Clergy Letter Project led by Professor Michael Zimmerman of the University of Wisconsin. The whole purpose of the letter was to promote evolution on a day he referred to as "Evolution Sunday".
Now over 10,000 pastors are confused and are confusing others - particularly youth and children by claiming that Christianity and "science", or evolution are compatible. The fact of the matter is that evolution and Christianity are not compatible. Not only that, but they are complete opposites and you cannot believe both. You either believe one or the other.
Dr. Richard Dawkins, a known atheist from Oxford University hosted a television program in the UK. His claims were that fundamentalist Christians were attacking science which could not be further from the truth. Christians use science in a way that is good, moral, ethical, and helpful to humanity which excludes evolution because evolution is not science. It's a theory and in some cases is to be looked at as science fiction. My former pastor once said " If evolution is real, then maybe we need to start apologizing to the monkeys for our behavior".
Not only did Dr. Dawkins misrepresent what Christians believe about science, but he compared them to terrorists by quoting the well known songs "Onward Christian Soldiers" and "Stand Up for Jesus ye soldiers of the Cross".What gets me is the fact that there are churches out there that have been brainwashed by this unreasonable untruthful propaganda. Christianity is under attack and we must not believe those who are doing the attacking, lest we become like them.
So what can you and I do? For one thing we can keep our faith and reject the teachings of those who despise us for our faith. We can pray and minister to those who view us in these ways and tell them the message of salvation. I know that not all of us are called to be missionaries but under Jesus' command, or the Great Commission, we are to go out into the world and preach the gospel. I am no preacher, but I do support these organizations like Answers in Genesis and many others who fight daily to keep the word of God alive in a culture who wishes it dead. I urge you to do the same.
