Now I Know How Jesus Feels
By Sally Bishai (03/28/06)
If you're a Christian, you probably believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died on the cross to save us from sins. (My Muslim and Jewish friends may disagree with this, but this is not what today's lecture is all about!)
Anyway, I'd like everyone to know here and now that I know how Jesus feels!
What do I mean? Let's see...
He came to earth in a form he may not have been too happy to have taken, and suffered for us.. became SIN for us.. and what did we do?
We spit in His face. We don't give Him the respect and devotion that we should. We grouse over reading the Bible for 5 minutes, when, in fact, we should cheerfully give 10%--minimum!--of our time to Him.
Tithing isn't just about money, friends.
At any rate, I know how JC must feel about having His precious gift unrealized and unappreciated because I find myself in the same (albeit much less important!) dilemma. Quandary.
Wait, I'm not trying to make a decision or anything...
Ok, situation. I find myself in the same situation.
Why? Because.
I find myself dedicating more time to the classes I teach than I do to my own studies (I *am* trying to finish this PhD before 2008, you know!) and yet.. my students not only don't appreciate the time and care I put into the class (bunch of houligans!), but some of them make my life a living hell.
For example, I there’s the students who skip class and then waste millions of hours with fake sob stories (which I’ve caught them in, by the way!).
“Oh, Miss SALLY!” they begin, “I was dying to come to class, but my mom slipped on a banana peel and I broke my hypothalamus and had to go to the nurse’s station!”
You can’t BREAK your hypothalamus, love.
And then there’s the kids who think they can befriend you and get on your good side and get out of assignments, and get INTO some great recommendation letters and grades.
And then there are the kids who stalk you for some reason, whether they want something from you, or whether they think you’re their new best friend. These kids have been known to call, email and txt message ad infinitum. They can be very pushy—even if they’re otherwise nice and fun to be with—and speaking to them for over five minutes can be very wearing on a person.
“Then why give them your number, Sally? HMMMM?”
I’ll tell you why! Wait. My number’s in the phone book, don’t blame me! Hmph.
Moving right along, we have the kids who are big fat backstabbers. They pretend to have a good attitude, but if you’re a smart cookie, which I happen to be (what cookie? Upgrade me to a cake!), you can tell that these kids are poison-blooded individuals who only like to backstab and be horrid to a person, from their best friends to their favorite professors. (Which I know I’m NOT to them.)
Finally, there are the good kids, the ones who do their homework, who come in knowing their lessons, and ready to learn. They are not looking for shortcuts, and, while they would like an A, they realize that they have to put some time in to get one!
They may not be perfect, but at least they try.
Even one of those kids makes teaching college worthwhile.
So.. while my teaching a class or three is actually nothing compared to the sacrifice of the dear and beloved savior, I understand how he feels... and I know now how He could hurt Himself and become a sacrifice for even one person, much less the whole world.
Praise be to Him, and may we endeavor to deserve even a drop of the precious Blood that was spilled for us!
(And may my kids endeavor to NOT give me a stroke before final exams!)
