Secure Our Future: The Arizona Governor's Race
By J. James Estrada (06/10/06)
Len Munsil is running for Arizona Governor. On his campaign signs around town, under Len’s name it says “Secure Our Border.” In this race against Janet Napolitano, it might be better to say “Secure Our Future.” A leader who cowers when facing tough challenges, jeopardizes not only his or her political prospects, but subjects all of the citizenry to the consequences of too little resolve in these perilous times. Another four years of Napolitano, who favors status quo on illegal immigration and the porous border, could turn the state into a national disaster area. We’re already number one in crime in the nation. And this from a person who tells us she’s tough on crime.
This reminds of her mentors, Bill & Hillary Clinton (Clinton appointed Napolitano to the U.S. Attorney position in Arizona in 1993). Before they became President, the Clinton’s ran Arkansas. They took that state to great heights of educational progress, remember? Actually they were either dead last or next to last in that category. Yet, they someone took that resume with them to the White House. Does Napolitano have aspirations to higher political office? There is talk of her being number 2 on a Democratic presidential ticket. So, why not get her an early start on that quest by punching her ticket this November?
I met Munsil at a Memorial Day weekend at a gathering at Bill Montgomery’s Gilbert, Arizona home. Montgomery is running against incumbent Democrat Terry Goddard in the Arizona Attorney General race. Montgomery has said that he will enforce Prop 200, something Goddard has failed to do. That would be a change of pace. A politician actually saying he would follow the will of the people.
When I entered Montgomery’s home, a Munsil volunteer asked if I had yet signed a petition for her candidate. No, I hadn’t, since I didn’t know much about him. I explained I wanted the best possible candidate to take the Republican nomination. She said that after he spoke, that I would see what she sees in him. Well, she was right. Munsil is sincere, knowledgeable, conservative and upstanding. His ideas to fight crime, save the taxpayer money, and provide overall leadership, were in line with the Reagan tradition.
Montgomery mentioned the formation of an illegal alien task force. Now how is that going to come about under a Governor Napolitano? It’s not. Munsil mentioned returning the budget surplus to those it rightly belongs to, taxpayers. Now how is that going to come about under a Governor Napolitano? It’s not.
Those in attendance this evening promised to hold these gentlemen’s feet to the fire should they win in November. Both Munsil and Montgomery welcomed that opportunity. Together, they just might actually solve problems here in Arizona instead of pointing fingers at Washington. Napolitano has shown great prowess in writing letters to Washington (her solution to local situations). These guys won’t write letters, they’ll just right wrongs as they see it. And that gives me a secure feeling.
