MANUFACTURING THE NEWS AT CHANNEL 7 IN CHICAGO

CHICAGO (28 June, '06)--It is difficult to get the news in Chicago about illegal immigration or the impact Latinos are having on life here. There is a media bias to ignore disturbing facts or to paint a rosy picture about the ugly transformation of the city.
The Tribune never does a story about how many illegal immigrants deliver newspapers door to door in the Chicago area. Nobody reports on the immigration status of those arrested for crimes because of the sanctuary city policy that was put in place by the mayor. Now, Channel 7, ABC News even reports what is not true.
In her recent program "Out Of Many... One," highlighting prominent Latinos in the city who are supposedly making a difference, reporter Theresa Gutierrez says, "It may not be an issue, but it is a fact that Sylvia (Ramos) is the first Latino President of any of the Chicago City Colleges."
Theresa Gutierrez is absolutely wrong here. It is an issue and it is not a fact. Ted Martinez, Jr. was president of Daley College long before Ramos arrived. Patrice M. Jones, Tribune higher education writer, had this to say about Martinez in her article, DALEY COLLEGE CHIEF QUITS; TAINTED BY GRADE SCANDAL, "Ted Martinez, the Daley City College president who came under scrutiny during a grade controversy last year, resigned Monday to take a job as president of a community college in California. Martinez...had served as president of Daley since 1994 and was a City Colleges system employee for 6 1/2 years..."
Writing about the turmoil under that administration at Daley College, one college professor there claims, "And then there are the casualties of the last 5 years, people whose lives and careers were wrenched asunder. They... paid a price which no one can make whole. All we can do is acknowledge their sacrifices, with gratitude."
In a city where 77% of the Latinos are Mexican, Theresa Gutierrez ends her report by claiming, "I must say that now is a very exciting time to be a Latino, Mexican in particular, in the City of Chicago"
I imagine that somewhere in the Kremlin, there was at one time a low level bureaucrat who also felt such excitement. Oh, how excited he was, as he altered a photograph, changed the name on a document, and rewrote history in support of the Big Lie!
