An Open Letter To President Bush
By Jon Alvarez (08/30/03)
Dear President Bush,
Thank you! Thank you for your strength and leadership during these trying times. You have instilled in our country a renewed sense of pride and patriotism. There has been a major shift in attitudes and priorities in this country since you came into office.
Many Americans now realize that it's not the professional athletes or Hollywood stars who deserve our admiration, but our brave military, police, and fire personnel. We have had zero terrorist attacks on our country since 9-11, thanks in large part to your efforts to protect us. You were dead on when you told the world that that they are either with us or against us in the war on terror.
We've learned a lot about the true nature of those we had considered friends. We've also been able to determine who is with us and who is not here at home. Those who aren't are quite easy to recognize. They tend to recoil from flag-waving and love of country like a vampire splashed with holy water.
Those same Americans have attacked you with such maliciousness. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. They should be thankful and appreciative of the fact that you have proven to be such a strong leader. I'd rather have a cowboy protecting the herd than a doctor or a lawyer. They've tried to label you as an evil despot bent on ruling the world. It must be upsetting to them to hear about Iraqis naming babies after you.
You are responsible for the liberation of millions of people in Afghanistan and Iraq. You have stood your ground with regards to the war on terror and have been able to withstand the most vicious and unfounded attacks on your character. For that, I thank you.
While offering no substantive alternatives to your plans and actions, which they so gleefully condemn, your Democratic opponents have proven to the American public that they do not have America's best interests at heart. Rather, these petty politicians are concerned solely with discrediting you in order to regain political power. Their irresponsible behavior has not only been a divisive force at a time when a united front is sorely needed; it has also emboldened our enemies abroad.
It's time for Americans to recognize that you have done an excellent job as the leader of our country. How many other people are truly up to the task of running our country? How many people would even want this thankless job? Many of us out there do appreciate you and pray for you every day.
Thank you for being a man of such strong convictions and for not faltering under the great burden of leading our nation. You've inspired many of us to become more involved and better citizens. Thank you President Bush.
