Is It War Yet?

There are some that won’t believe we are at war until their parents, children, siblings or spouses are blown up by a suicide bomber at the Starbucks. They may not believe it even then.
For everyone else, the thwarting of the plot to blow up airplanes over the Atlantic should have been a wakeup call to the very real fact that we are at war with Islamofacists that will stop at nothing to achieve their goals.
Five years after September 11 and America has gone back to sleep. We are awakened now and then by the noise from Iraq, but we would rather that someone shut up that barking dog so we may return to our slumber. After all, we’ve got a golf game tomorrow, the kids have soccer practice and we don’t want to miss American Idol.
Israel is fighting for its very existence and all we want is for the shooting to stop.
What will it take for Americans to wake up? What will it take for our government to wake up?
Instead of sending Condolezzaa Rice jetting around the world talking about a cease-fire, we should be supplying Israel with every weapon they can use to wipe out Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Instead of concerning ourselves with carefully worded UN resolutions that are worth less than the paper on which they are written, we should be identifying targets in Teheran.
If World War II had been fought like we’re fighting this war, you would be speaking German today.
Ned Lamont won a primary victory in Connecticut because he and his followers don’t believe there is a reason to be fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. They believe that if the US just pulled out, everyone would like us and would leave us alone. We weren’t in Iraq or Afghanistan on September 11 and they didn’t leave us alone.
Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the ACLU don’t believe the government should listen in to phone calls between terrorists. Apparently they would be just fine had those ten planes flying from London to the United States had exploded.
Warnings of possible al Qaeda terrorist attacks in India and Italian and Belgian authorities investigating terrorist financing activities in those countries offers even more proof that this war is not just a war against the United States and Israel but against the entire Western world, but yet Americans are in denial.
There are two barriers to winning the misnamed “war on terror(ism).” The first is getting Americans past the idea that we aren’t at war. It has been going on for nearly three decades and it is continually escalating, but too many just don’t or can’t see that.
The second barrier is getting over the walking-on-eggshells, politically correct approach to waging the war. The UN is totally worthless. The UN can come up with resolutions until the cows come home, but they won’t change a thing. Diplomacy with terrorists doesn’t work and resolutions have no effect on terrorist-sponsoring states.
The only thing that terrorists respect is strength. Harry Truman wasn’t afraid to demonstrate strength to bring and end to World War II. Will anyone have what it takes to show similar strength today? George W. Bush understands the threat, but doesn’t appear to have the resolve to buck the naysayers.
When will Americans, and especially those naysayers, realize that we are in a war for our survival? Will the realization come only on the day that New York or Washington looks like Dresden or Nagasaki?
