These are the Stakes

Oftentimes, religious conservatives are chided for being obsessed with issues surrounding homosexuality. There’s something to be said for this charge. It can rightfully be said that there are issues of greater importance even from the cultural perspective than homosexuality. As such, I have devoted precious little space to the subject.
I’ve written more than 150 columns in the last 2 years, only one of which has been dedicated to the discussion of homosexuality exclusively. This isn’t an issue I seek out. However, as a blogger, it’s an issue that’s come up in recent days through the discussion of the Mark Foley issue.
Charges of bigotry were hurled at me for stating the simple fact that Homosexual or Bi-Sexual men account for 1.33% of the adult population and approximately 28% of the pedophiles in this country. Suggesting not that all homosexuals are child molesters but merely that there is a higher level of this behavior among homosexual has led to charges of bigotry, even though I was strictly dealing in the facts as we know them.
When I think about the word bigotry, I think of racial prejudice, and most Americans do as well. Thus we see the problem with the homosexual agenda. If the goal of homosexuals were to be allowed to peacefully live their lives and society mind its own business, I think few people would have an objection to it. My problem with the Lawrence decision wasn’t that I was a huge fan of Sodomy laws, but rather that in a legal absurdity, the Supreme Court ruled Sodomy a Constitutional right.
If the agenda were just against workplace discrimination or housing discrimination, Christian Conservatives would disagree vociferously with putting behavior in the same class as race and gender, but the level of the debate would not be so escalated.
However, the issue of bigotry is another matter. The goal of homosexuality is not living a life without harassment, but rather creating a world where to be against homosexuality is the same thing as being an anti-semite or racially prejudiced against Blacks.
Indeed, on their blogs, this is discussed as the way the world is. Pam Spaulding throws out the term “Homo Bigot” to describe any group of Christian Conservatives which disagrees with her. Imagine a world where support for the Bible is considered on par with the activities of the Ku Klux Klan. In Sweden, a pastor was initially convicted of a crime after preaching against homosexuality. His case took years working through the court system until the conviction was overturned.
Imagine the same thing going on in America. It’s not far fetched and it is the logical conclusion of a movement that insists not only that homosexuality is right and acceptable, but that it is immutable.
If the radical Homosexual movement succeeds in its ultimate aim of making opposition to homosexuality morally equivalent to racism, Churches will either be forced to stop preaching on what the Bible says against homosexuality or face the persecution from the state and society as a whole.
To stop preaching against homosexuality is more than just to give up on that issue. It is to betray the Bible and 2000 years of Christian tradition to appease the Spirit of the Age. It would be an abomination to which no faithful Christian could ascribe.
I bare no ill will towards homosexuals, but at stake in this issue is not just the sanctity of the family, but the religious freedom of every Bible-believing Christian in America. For that reason, we cannot afford to lose.
