M&M Boys for Arizona?
By J. James Estrada (10/16/06)
The Yankees had the M&M Boys in their lineup during the 1960’s. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris appeared in five World Series together. Maris held the single season home run record longer than anyone in baseball history and Mantle is legendary.
This November, Arizona voters could establish a new pair of M&M boys. Len Munsil and Bill Montgomery are running for Governor and Attorney General, respectively. In their path are long time politicians, Janet Napolitano and Terry Goddard.
There is something to be said in regards to new leadership for new challenges. Napolitano has proven herself to be weak on border security and illegal immigration issues, while Goddard has failed to even feign interest in these areas of concern.
Munsil is running on a platform that includes, “Secure the Border Now!” His plan calls for increased security through the construction of fencing, the implementation of sophisticated radar technology and the deployment of an effective National Guard presence.
Montgomery, a Gilbert resident, would first and foremost back the voter initiative that Goddard has loathed to enforce, Prop 200. A Ninth District Court of Appeals ruling has placed portions of the proposition in limbo and it will be telling how vigorously Goddard responds. Meanwhile, Montgomery has stated that he would enforce all of the provisions without the foot-dragging that Goddard exhibits.
In other matters of concern, Montgomery’s website describes where Arizona ranks in crime statistics in the nation during the last six years. We are the worst!
During the Napolitano-Goddard reign, we are worst in the nation for violent crime and property crime; 2nd worst in vehicle theft; 4th worst in larceny theft; 4th worst in murder. Hard to believe, isn’t it? Well, we also rank number one in the nation in identity theft!
Montgomery’s bio cites this recognition from the Town of Gilbert: he was awarded a Mayoral Excellence Award as the Town of Gilbert’s Man of the Year in 2004 for his service on the Gilbert Community Activities Board and his chairmanship of that board for the past two years.
Additionally, Montgomery has an extensive legal background working for the citizens of Maricopa County through the county’s Attorney’s Office. While serving there, Montgomery prosecuted felony DUIs, vehicular manslaughters and aggravated assaults, repeat felons and criminal street gangs and their members.
Montgomery is campaigning across the state and assuring voters of all of Arizona’s counties that he is capable, experienced, and willing to fight for a set of conservative ideals and principles which define Arizona.
Montgomery served as a tank platoon leader in the first Gulf War. He will tell you, however, that what you’ve done in the past is not a propellant that carries you into the present, but merely a yardstick for future accomplishment. As a man of humble roots, Montgomery is not so much concerned for his own ambitions, but of simply filling a need in the community at large.
These M&M Boys may make national headlines as the pair who retired some aging veterans.
