It will all be over shortly, for better or worse; many agree that the midterm election of 2006 is (or was, if you’re reading this after 11/7/06) perhaps more significant than will be the general election of 2008. It has been the ugliest, most calumny-ridden election season I’ve ever seen, for reasons that are apparent to some and not so apparent to others.
As my friend and colleague Marie Jon’ put it the other day (and I’m paraphrasing), “The GOP may not be perfect, but the Democrat Party is subversive and evil.” I think I would amend that to “the Democrat Party is subversive and is serving evil.” I’ve attempted to clarify on several occasions that this corruption is largely focused within the national Democrat Party leadership (as opposed to some silly blanket indictment of all Democrats as serving evil); this has gone largely ignored by those who choose to manufacture their own reality – or just enjoy writing profanity-laced hate mail.
A great deal of the diatribe that’s ensued has centered around the War on Terror (or WWIII, if you prefer), particularly the Bush Administration’s handling of the Iraq campaign. It is in this area I’ve heard most of the blatant lies and fearmongering during the election campaign. Certainly recent and past scandals involving irresponsible Republican leaders and RINO (Republican In Name Only) politicians haven’t helped.
I’m no historian, but I imagine it’s possible that just prior to Philip II of Macedon’s defeat of Athenian forces in 338 BC, there were factions in Athens who were busily casting blame as to how the other (or others) had potentially doomed them to Macedonian conquest. The Old Testament is replete with similar stories (some involving prophets) of those who attempted to provide sober advice to Jewish kings whilst various factions indulged in promoting falsehood, engaged in vainglory – and elected to worship these strange carved poles for some obscure reason.
Considering television news program ratings, it’s clear that many Americans viewed the much-publicized and much-analyzed interview conducted by Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly with President Bush late last month. To the rational, it was probably enlightening on at least one or two levels; to far-Right and far-Left wackadoos, it was likely a great big yawn. Say what you like about Fox and O’Reilly; the latter is an experienced and excellent interviewer.
I would have held respect for Bill Clinton, Al Gore or John Kerry if they made it from September 11, 2001 until now as President without having a nervous breakdown or drinking themselves into a treatment center. As so many have pointed out, according to the Democrats, no one in the Bush administration can get out of bed in the morning without screwing it up. They’ve no answer, however, as to how they would handle our geopolitical woes – only accusations and invective.
In the Fox interview, I desperately wanted the President to pause mid-stream, look O’Reilly in the eye and say: “I’d just like to know how the opposition thinks they’d handle our situation with the media sigmoidoscope up their behind twenty-four-seven.”
There’s no such thing as perfection in the human condition, and certainly not in war. Governments are comprised of human beings. The first sentence of our Constitution refers to creating “a more perfect Union” – not “a perfect Union.” Why? Because the Founding Fathers realized there was only one realm in which perfection exists, and it is not this one.
Those Old Testament prophets repeatedly advised that worshipping certain carved poles wasn’t a real good idea given that the way to peace and prosperity had been laid out for them. No matter how many times the people got screwed after falling into pole-worship, they kept going back for more.
The secular Left (of which the Democrat leadership and most of our press is currently comprised) has, since the time of Karl Marx, attempted to seduce society after society into the belief that they can achieve perfection. The more political power they gain in America, the louder their collective voice becomes. This is from whence the vitriol of their attacks and the shamelessness of their calumny springs. Having displaced everything morally and spiritually-sound, as secular socialists always do, they become their own gods. So there’s no need for introspection – gods are always right.
For me, the only question is: Will America begin kneeling before carved poles in January 2007, January 2009 – or not at all?
