PREDICTING OUR ENEMIES IN 2007
By Robert Klein Engler (12/05/06)
CHICAGO--(5 December '06) The year 2006 draws to a close. It's not been a good year for the Bush Administration. Uncontrolled illegal immigration, the war in Iraq and losses in the midterm elections have proven to be embarrassments. In '06 conservatives could have used better leaders.
In spite of embarrassments, it seems everyone wants to predict political events at year's end. In so doing they risk looking foolish, but can this make them any more foolish than some who are elected to shape events? Perhaps a new approach is needed. Instead of predicting if Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton or Rudy Giuliani will run for president, why not predict who will be the enemies of the U. S. next year?
As the new year unfolds, two enemies of the U. S. will emerge. They will be religious Iran and secular Mexico. Certainly, Russia, China and the European Union would like to see U. S. power falter, but they will not act when it is possible for Iran and Mexico to harm the U. S. without involving them.
Iran and Mexico already have engaged the U. S. and found it indecisive and addicted. With the exception of our addiction for cheap goods from China, Mexico and Iran manipulate our addiction for cheap oil and cheap labor. Both these nations know now that they can use our weakness and addiction to their advantage. Mexico invades the U. S. with illegal immigrants, devastating many communities, while Iran invades Iraq with insurgents that frustrate our foreign policy.
Beside political differences, Mexico and Iran also have long-standing cultural differences that make them enemies to the U. S. Behind Iran is Islam and it's desire to convert the world. Behind Mexico is a simmering communism, that will come to a boil in spite of the recent election of PAN candidate Felipe Calderón.
Both Islam and communism have been at war, off and on, with the West for centuries. The ruling elites in the U. S. along with the transnational business executives they support do not want to imagine this long-standing war, but the average, working class American knows it is happening. Average Americans also know that because of cultural differences, this war will continue and grow more violent.
It is hard to imagine how the Democrats will deal with Mexico and Iran. The Democratic Party stays in power by manipulating minorities, so the Democrats are pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants. The Democrats want illegal immigrants to the U. S. to become Democratic voters. The Democrats are also antimilitary and believe that negotiations can talk Iran out of developing nuclear weapons. So, don't expect the Democrats to deal forcefully with either Mexico or Iran next year.
If the Democrats have their way, and do bring home our troops from Iraq in six months, a possible consequence of this will be to have enough troops stationed in the U. S. to quell the social unrest that may break out because of future terrorist attacks at home. Perhaps the final irony will be to have the troops that are brought home from Iraq become the same troops that support a military coup that ousts the Democrats.
The present Republican administration, with its business interests and neocon supporters imagines a world where oil flows and business runs as usual. The present administration is blind to the fundamental cultural differences between Mexico, Iran and the U. S., but it does see clearly who its big contributors are. Nor does the present administration read what our enemies write and recognize that the war on terror will become a larger war against Islam.
If the Democrats and Republicans are blind to the problems facing the U. S., our enemies are not. Iran wants to drive Israel into the sea. President Ahmadinejhad will get his nuclear weapons, and if unchecked, use them to threaten Israel. Iran will go on then to influence Saudi Arabia, and eventually control the oil of the Mideast.
Growing civil unrest in Mexico will force thousands of illegals northward, while at the same time make Mexico more dependent on billions in remittances. Likewise, Mexican drug cartels will add to the tension along the Mexico/U. S. border.
In the coming year events will reach a point where many politicians will neither be able to understand nor control them. Iran and Mexico will not work for progress and peace, but against U. S. interests. The new Speaker of the House of Representatives will preside over either a growing chaos or paralysis. It will be clear next year that if the opposite of "pro" is "con," then the opposite of "progress" is "...?"
