The "National Budget Deficit" Blown out of the Water
By Kevin Roeten (12/28/06)
Have you heard those that complain about running a yearly deficit? What about those who complain about the US debt? The ties to those that do and those that want Bush out of office are closer than you can imagine. The complainers seem to have their priorities "way" out of line.
Letâs dispose of a few facts before the âmeatâ of the matter. Sure, the projected budget deficit(OMB) and the president is on track of meeting the goal of cutting the deficit in half by 2008âa year ahead of schedule. And yes, over 2 million jobs have been created in 2006, and 5.4 million since August 2003. And yes, even unemployment has been hovering in the 4.5% range, which is actually considered âfull employmentâ anyway.
How can this possibly happen? Especially under the challenges the nation has faced in the last 5œ years---the stock market decline, the ârecessionâ that began in Clintonâs last year, the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the ensuing global war on terror, devastating hurricanes, and significant energy price increasesâŠ
The real reason behind this optimism has been the Presidentâs generated increased revenues due to tax reductions. Some people still donât believe that increased governmental revenues result(Laffer) from reduced tax rates. Itâs worked every time itâs been tried(i.e., with Kennedy, Reagan, and now Bush II). The economy has actually grown for 18 consecutive quarters.
But as anyone realizes, revenues(income) are only half of the equation. The other half is expenditures. Existing payouts are too voluminous to list. But the following are some exceptions, which should infuriate every rational person.
One particularly frustrating one, is the >$3 billion/yr the US contributes to the United Nations. Not only that, but the US has provided foreign aid to UN sanctioned countries in âbillionsâ of condoms. The US contribution has provided millions for abortions in third world countries. The UN is a huge proponent for population control, when in fact population will begin declining by 2200. UN figures show that 79 countries with 40% of the worldâs population now have fertility rates too low to prevent population decline.
Worse yet, some of the US dollars actually went to aid terrorist activities. Obviously, that includes 9/11, and the resultant deaths. It seemed obvious that Kofi Annan(UN President) and his son were involved with the âFood for Oilâ program with Saddam Hussein. After the fact, the âGAOâ determined that Hussein skimmed as much as $10 million from the âprogramâ, which either went to Hussein directly, or to terrorists.
In essence, one can say that Annan and the UN were partly responsible for the Iraq war. Had the UN followed-up on the 17 resolutions that were dictated(but snubbed by Hussein) there would have been no need for the Allied incursion. The UN has had a history of anti-American activity. It all seemed to come to a head when the UN would not approve of the âdeposingâ of Hussein. And, not to be forgotten, the UN(New York) says the price tag on its new renovation is ~2 billion, with the US share > $400 million. What would happen if the UN completely âdisappearedâ tomorrow? Most know many things that would not happen.
Another unquenchable budget drain is the ACLU. Eighty percent of their budget directly supports its litigation. Unquestionably, the past ACLU has aided unfair racial practices, and âAmericans with Disabilitiesâ concerns. But lately, they want to delete âOne Nation, Under Godâ from the âPledge of Allegianceâ, erase âIn God We Trustâ from our currency, and destroy all plaques that mention God that are found in public places. People have voted to unconstitutionally fund their activities under the Civil Rights Attorneyâs Fees Awards Act of 1976. In other words, the ACLU is using this law to recover all attorney fees associated with suits against the boy scouts, suits for the homosexual agenda, and those involving God. Few know the exact amount. And the ACLU, itself, says they have 400,000 paying members.
Planned Parenthood receives $265 million/yr in government grants, and even though considered a ânon-profitâ organization, posted $37 million in profit(in 2002 alone). In 30 years(1977-2002), Planned Parenthood conducted 3,246, 934 recorded abortions. Thatâs 108,231 per year, or 297 deaths per day. Jay Sekulow(TownHall) reports that it has used >$500 million of taxpayer money for many suits involving âpartial birth abortionâ.
Another âoutrageousâ item is the $1.7 billion/yr(Bob Ward/ Royal Society) that the US foots for âglobal warming potentialâ reductions---even after it has been shown that the majority of any âglobal warmingâ is due to natural variability.
The next time someone yells about the âbudget deficitâ, weâll know that âdeficitâ really has nothing to do with it. Itâs simply oneâs priorities.
