The Truth Comes Out After Bolton's Resignation
By Kevin Roeten (01/21/07)
Why does the real truth emerge only after someone is gone from their particular position? With John Bolton(UN/US Representative) the ‘truth’ is quite revealing. It turns out that Bolton was indeed the person needed at the UN, but the recent election results pushed him away. Bolton resigned his post as Acting US Ambassador to the UN. Many claim he resigned because of opposition by the incoming Democrat-controlled senate.
Most know that Bolton’s confirmation to his UN position had stalled in the Senate for over a year. His nomination had been blocked by Democrats and a few Republicans—especially with Democrat filibusters. In two recent votes, the Ambassador had received 54, and 56 votes respectively for office confirmation. But these totals were not enough to overcome the 60 votes needed to eliminate the existing filibuster. Maybe we don’t have a more ‘friendly’ Congress after all.
As expected, the president was deeply disappointed that a handful of US senators refuse to give Bolton an up or down vote he deserved in the Senate. It turns out that Focus on the Family has described Bolton as a “pro-life gentleman” on their radio show. After meeting with Bolton, they concluded that the Democrats were opposing him because “he’s pro-life, pro-morality, pro-family, and sees things the way we do regarding condoms and abstinence and other things.” But Howard Phillips(Chairman/ Conservative Caucus) remarked that Bolton’s efforts defending life and family would have been undercut by the Bush Administration’s continued financial support of the UN. The uninformed don’t seem to realize that monies sent to the UN actually wind up supporting the UN and its anti-life American agenda.
Bolton was a good man, but the problem with his service was that people tended to diminish their hostility to the UN because of Bolton’s presence. Many should understand that the problem is not with who represents us at the UN, but that it is an inherently evil institution. The “Oil-for Food” scandal with Hussein was only the tip of the iceberg. The UN has had anti-American tendencies for decades. It will hopefully be discovered that the UN is largely a criminal entity whose petty agendas are at odds on a global basis with freedom and democracy.
It is widely known that, without a doubt, the US will suffer from the partisan rejection of Bolton, because it may discourage well-qualified nominees from UN service. There’s even been some ‘negative’ information published on Ambassador Bolton. Included are: In the 1990’s, he advocated normalizing ties with Taiwan. He advocated a policy of ‘regime change’ rather than negotiation and dealing with North Korea. He advocated halting payments to the UN. At a $3 billion/ year ‘bill’ for dealing with the UN, that would tend to accelerate our movement to a balanced budget. He warned that the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was attempting ‘a coup d’etat’ against the authority of the five permanent members of the Security Council.’ He was openly hostile to international treaties(i.e., the ABM Treaty), and was highly supportive of protection though Missile Defense(He was one that realized that the Soviet Union no longer existed.) He led the drive for the US refusal to sign the statute that created the new International Criminal Court(ICC).
He had even prepared testimony for Congress that Syria possessed a ‘WMD’ program that was a threat to regional security. His testimony was rescheduled because the State Department’s intelligence bureau objected to the ‘characterization’. Of the four most likely possibilities of what happened to Hussein’s WMD’s that he was known to have, one sticks out like a sore thumb--the one that Hussein shipped his WMD’s to terrorist nations before the Allied incursion. It’s interesting how Iraqi General Georges Saddas’ new book Saddam’s Secrets detailed how the WMD’s were moved to----Syria.
All of those issues sound more and more like attributes. No doubt we will miss such a formidable presence in the UN. If Bolton ever decides to run for any position, sign me up. He’s definitely worth voting for.
