"The Sky is Thawing", and other Global Warming Folktales
By Miguel Guanipa (02/15/07)
There is a bit of irony in the fact that a hearing to debate whether or not Greenhouse Gas Emissions from human activities are contributing to a warming of the planet was postponed by The Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality due to inclement weather. I suppose it would be hard to be taken seriously when waxing poetic about the scourge of Global Warming amidst one the harshest cold spells in this country's history; but if the Global Warming alarmists are entitled to frolic in a parallel reality, what is to stop us skeptics from engaging in similar flights of fancy?
To wit, imagine for a moment Al Gore suddenly disowning Global Warming as the hoax many people are beginning to suspect it really is. Picture Mr. Gore in an unusually self-effacing mood confessing that all this time he has been misled and perhaps even lured by the power and fame that came along with pledging one’s allegiance to the Global Warming crusade; after all Mr. Gore has been known to change his mind before.
Of course if he did that he would be placing his celebrity status – a carryover from his defunct political career - at great peril. His followers who virtually worship him would immediately admit the obvious, and that is that Mr. Gore is a mere figure head who in reality knows as much about the subject of global climate change as Britney Spears knows about quantum mechanics.
They would no less try to salvage his irreplaceable magnetic persona by suggesting that he first go through some kind of reeducation seminar while the media shifts its focus to 9/11 conspiracy theory stories in order to divert public attention away from their clearly delirious ex-dignitary.
Of course we are all dreaming something like this would happen, but obviously if a guy is willing to go to the Supreme Court to teach us all a civics lesson because he can not accept the fact that he lost a presidential bid, there’s very little chance that he will relinquish this golden egg goose; especially when the stakes include receiving the coveted academy awards trophy for his recent silver screen fairy tale and an undisclosed number of future book deals.
For now Mr. Gore and his compatriots are fine with continuing to be part of a modern day witch-hunt, where anyone who even implies that their global climate doomsday speculations border on the patently ridiculous risks being compared to a holocaust denier and worthy of being put through a Nuremberg trial form of inquest.
In fact the Global Warming bandwagon is getting so overloaded these days that virtually anyone who even attempts to overturn it is classified as a member of the flat earth society. The odds of keeping your job as a climatologist or an academic if you dare attempt such a feat are as good as those of a Jewish chaplain working for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s faith based initiatives program.
Unfortunatelly the Anti-Global Warming Hysteria scientists are not the kind of marginalized minority liberals typically like to root for. They are labeled as being too closely associated with the evil forces of capitalist greed, in spite of the fact that taking a stand against what is presently considered the consensus is on a par with committing academic Hara-kiri.
And the best part about it is that Global Warming is a very easy subject to discuss for both brainy scientists and the average layman who is barely acquainted with the subject, as they can easily gain the upper hand on a debate regardless of their lack of expertise, considering that the innumerable evils to which it has been linked range from the disrupted hibernation of some mammals to an increase in suicide among overheated senior citizens; no wonder a disaffected blogger recently quipped that he would “buy 2 more SUV's if [he] thought it would cause Al Gore or John Kerry to jump off of a building”.
Philanthropists and corporate moguls are pouring their dollars into it, public television is lending its hand to fully indoctrinate our youth, it has surreptitiously snuck it way into children’s entertainment in the form of movies and video games, and some countries have even begun considering making it a part of the curriculum in state founded schools across the board.
No doubt the great proselytizing has already begun, and the age-old proverb stands: if you tell a lie often enough, people will eventually believe it.
