The Fraud That Washington Fell For
By James T. Moore (05/28/07)
There are so many scams and hoaxes being foisted on the public today, and so much deception, secrecy, and dishonesty taking place in the political arena, it is difficult to find a word of truth in the glossary of lies. But the biggest and most damaging fraud of all was perpetrated on this country in 1943; that was the year that a super fraud emerged and Washington fell for it. And worse, the governing body of this once great nation is still falling for it.
Does this “mother of all frauds” have a name? Indeed it does: The American Enterprise Institute (AEI), which is a Washington-based, well-entrenched “think tank” of Harvard, Yale, etc. intellectuals who became the leading architects of the Bush administration’s foreign policy.
In other words, this benign sounding institute has been a wellspring of neoconservative thought and action, proven by its support for U.S. intervention in the Middle East; including support for the invasion of Iraq, and more recently, pushing for a policy of regime change in Iran.
AEI rents office space to The Project for the New American Century, a leading voice that pushed the Bush administration for “regime change” via war in Iraq. Meanwhile, AEI reps are still aggressively denying that the war has anything to do with oil. But before you take that to the bank, consider this: The American Enterprise Institute has been playing a major role in shaping U.S. economic, energy, social, foreign, and military policies since World War II. And it is still in the driver’s seat when it comes to America’s influence and impact on the world.
“The American Enterprise Institute,” maintains Paul Craig Roberts, “camouflages its purpose with its name. Its real name should be The Center for Middle East War. AEI has the largest collection of warmongers in America and has agitated for war in the Middle East for years. A moronic president and 9/11 gave them their opportunity. Now that the invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan have failed,” Roberts concludes, “the AEI warmongers are conspiring with Vice President Cheney to foment war with Iran.”
Tough and accusative words, but with his extensive governmental experience, “insider” knowledge, and impeccable record and reputation, if Roberts knows this to be a fact, it’s a fact.
Ardent and astute “students” of politics, however, seem to keep asking this same question over and over, and getting no satisfactory answers: “If it’s true that a cabal of neoconservatives silently and secretly hijacked this administration and are now, for all practical purposes, running our country, how did this gang of warmongers get into these powerful positions in our government in the first place?”
Good question, and this is the high point of the fraud that Washington fell for; and to give those “students” the unedited, un-doctored truth that cannot be questioned, here is the answer.
In 2003. President Bush gave a speech at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. The large audience consisted of officials, scholars, and supporters of the American Enterprise Institute. Bush’s was a warm-up speech for Dr. Allan Meltzer, honoring his “lifetime of achievement” with AEI.
Needless to say, Bush’s speech was filled with false hope, inaccurate information, trumped-up “commitments” to peace, deceptive statements, even downright lies. But through all his babbling, one paragraph came out of Bush’s mouth that should answer, once and for all, how the neocons invaded the White House, and the decline of our nation began.
Here are President Bush’s exact words to the AEI audience(1):
“At the American Enterprise Institute, some of the finest minds in our nation are at work on some of the greatest challenges to our nation. You do such good work that my administration has borrowed 20 of such minds. I want to thank them for their service, but I also want to remind people that for 60 years AEI scholars have made vital contributions to our country and to our government. And we are grateful for those contributions.”
Although many more neoconservative “minds” have joined the ranks of the 20 that Bush originally let loose on the sensitive machinations of the American government, Bush, in his long speech, never again mentioned The American Enterprise Institute. He didn’t have to. In one short paragraph he gave us all the “factual” information we need to identify the most dangerous enemy within our government-- and even more importantly, how it got there.
