A Conservative Elitist Backstab
By Bob Parks (06/01/07)
The International Relations Center describes Linda Chavez as "George W. Bush's first choice for labor secretary, Linda Chavez is a right-wing pundit, anti-union demagogue, and foreign policy hawk. She has supported or worked for a string of rightist outfits, including the Manhattan Institute, the Independent Women's Forum, and the Center for Equal Opportunity."
Well, we can add traitor to that description.
On May 25, Linda Chavez wrote a piece called, “Latino Fear and Loathing.” Chavez also wrote a book called, “An Unlikely Conservative: The Transformation of an Ex-Liberal.” From the words in her latest column, she may be reverting back, and is thus spitting on all who supported her before.
“Some people just don’t like Mexicans — or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans.”
Linda may have written that as an example, a hypothetical, a set-up for her column. However, she must be careful as anyone who’s lived in a border state may find some accuracy in her opening paragraph. As you read on, you’ll see Linda Chavez now has a few words reserved for people who believe in secure borders and are tired of people who were instructed on how to scam a system American taxpayers pay for.
Clever tactic to say some of us “just don’t like Mexicans.” Judging from the hundreds of thousands of “undocumented” people who took to our streets last summer, some could argue they just don’t like us. After all, we’re paying the price for their incursion into our country.
“Stripped bare, this is what the current debate on immigration reform is all about. Fear of “the other” — of those who look or sound different, who come from poor countries with unfamiliar customs — has been at the heart of every immigration debate this country has ever had, from the infamous Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 to the floor of the U.S. Senate this week.”
One of the pitfalls of being a columnist is having to repeat one’s ideals when a subject comes around again.
In a rather disingenuous manner, Chavez is accusing us of being bigots and we don’t like people who “look or sound different, who come from poor countries with unfamiliar customs.” What bullsh*t.
I lived in Southern California and it was never about not liking Latinos. It was about the frustration of having neighbors who came here on their own (they were not invited), and promptly began to receive public assistance many working Americans are ineligible for. Some of us saw this as a deliberate misuse of our tax dollars resulting in the gradual destruction of the social safety nets put in place to help Americans in distress, not people who violated our sovereign border, thus federal law.
“What is said today of the Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans and others was once said of Germans, Swedes, the Irish, Italians, Poles, Jews and others. The only difference is that in the past, the xenophobes could speak freely, unconstrained by a veneer of political correctness. Today, they speak more cautiously, so they talk about the rule of law, national security, amnesty, whatever else they think might make their arguments less racially charged.”
The Germans, Swedes, Irish, Italians, Poles, and Jews she speaks of did something almost immediately that many illegal Latinos refuse to do: assimilate. Many of the old-school immigrants wanted to be Americans, and that’s one of the reasons they came here. Some even went as far as changing their names. A few years ago in Los Angeles, Latino-American news reporters even went as far as referring to themselves with the Mexican pronunciation of their names just to show that old Latino pride.
This was really a show of an us-versus-them mentality mistaken by Angelinos as cultural pride. I say mistaken as to interpret it as anything else would brand one as a racist. That, I assume, was by design.
“Where once the xenophobes could advocate forced sterilization and eugenics coupled with virtually shutting off legal immigration from “undesirable” countries, now they must be content with building walls, putting troops on the border, rounding up illegal aliens on the job and deporting them, passing local ordinances to signal their distaste for immigrants’ multi-family living arrangements, and doing whatever else they can to drive these people back where they came from.”
I believe some of the xenophobes and eugenics fans Chavez is referring to were liberals (see Margaret Sanger and The Negro Project). And as far as putting troops on the border and rounding up illegal aliens on the job and deporting them, this is precisely what happens on Mexico’s southern border. The only difference is that the illegals rounded up by Mexico are routinely robbed, assaulted, raped, and even murdered.
A big difference than on our Southern Border. The fringe groups like The Minutemen Chavez refers to reports sightings of illegals once they’ve crossed into America. They don’t rob, assault, rape, or even murder. But somehow, Chavez has inferred such a similarity.
“The status quo — largely turning a blind eye toward the 12 million illegal aliens who work, pay taxes and keep their noses clean, while stepping up border enforcement and selective internal enforcement — may not be the worst possible outcome in the current debate on immigration reform. It is the coward’s way out of our current dilemma. But there are other problems with allowing the xenophobes to derail comprehensive immigration reform.”
The “12 million illegal aliens who work, pay taxes and keep their noses clean” work in most cases without paying the federal and state taxes we do. The more like 20 million “illegal aliens who work, pay taxes and keep their noses clean” may be keeping their noses clean now, but the very first act they committed in coming into this country was a violation of federal law. Some of the paperwork they use to get work are usually forged, thus another violation of state and federal law.
Hardly clean noses to be sure.
Also, the sales taxes they pay don’t even come close for the public school education per child, Section 8 housing, food stamps, and even cash illegals receive that Americans pay for.
The protests last summer were hardly taken as a “Thank you”, but more like a fu*k you and we demand more.
“We’ve struggled long and hard as a nation to overcome our prejudices, enduring a Civil War and countless dead for the right to be judged by the content of our character not the color of our skin or where we came from. Our country is the greatest, freest, most powerful and optimistic nation in the history of the world — and our people are good, decent, fair and the hardest working anywhere. That is why immigrants — even those who look and sound different, from nearby and far away — come here, often with only the clothes on their backs but a fire in their bellies to succeed. They make all of us richer, and by embracing and welcoming them, we make ourselves better.”
I wrote earlier that I believe Linda Chavez is reverting back to liberal status. It could be social pressure, who knows. But she’s now using all the code phrases and arguments used by multi-culturist liberals today.
Her reference to “the content of our character not the color of our skin” is a direct reference to Black people, as most liberals use Black people to bolster their arguments.
Black people, as Linda Chavez must know, did not steal across the border in the dead of night. Black people were brought here against their will, put into forced labor with no opportunity for free public school education for their children, Section 8 housing, food stamps, and even cash. To make such a comparison is an insult, yet typical in the liberal mindset.
Chavez wrote, “Our country is the greatest, freest, most powerful and optimistic nation in the history of the world — and our people are good, decent, fair and the hardest working anywhere. That is why immigrants — even those who look and sound different, from nearby and far away — come here, often with only the clothes on their backs but a fire in their bellies to succeed. They make all of us richer, and by embracing and welcoming them, we make ourselves better.”
Sure, that’s true, even though instead of showing respect for the rule of our laws, she’s just kissing our a**es after calling us all racists because we’re not willing to look the other way while parasites suck America’s blood.
There are many potential immigrants who are presently waiting in line, as they do not have the luxury of a border to just walk across. There are many good, decent, fair, hard working people waiting to come to America… to become Americans. You won’t see too many of them waving their homeland’s flag in our faces demanding we give them what they believe they deserve before calling us all racists.
Linda Chavez should know better. Maybe we now see who Linda Chavez really is.
