Liberals Still Wanting It Both Ways
By Charles Cole (02/11/04)
The recent disgusting display of liberal, Hollywood-ish MTV trash during the Super Bowl halftime “entertainment” show highlights for the discerning mind the total duplicity of contemporary liberalism. It is yet another indication of the irresponsible, immature, and thoughtless conduct which has characterized the left since the 1960s. It also reveals a mind-numbing level of hypocrisy typical of contemporary liberalism.
For example, while attempting to “move to the center” during political campaigns, most liberal politicians embrace “moderate” cultural values. After being elected to office, however, these same folks vote to provide public funding for “art” consisting of religious figures suspended upside down in bottles of urine!
Not long after the smoke had begun to dissipate from the ruins of the WTC, liberal activists in the media and on university campuses began to claim the attack was caused by hatred for America in the Middle East. This was allegedly the result of our failing to show empathy for their plight in ways Osama bin Laden has done (remember Senator Murray’s gaffe on this subject?). Perhaps many people in these countries do hate us, but just try to get a liberal to admit that a contributing factor to this hatred might be broadcasting scenes such as the Super Bowl halftime show into Muslim countries whose culture absolutely forbids conduct of this type. It might even be that the real cause of their contempt for America is not rooted in Republican mean-spirited greed, but perhaps in the totally out of control, profane displays belched onto the airwaves by MTV et al.
Equally thought provoking is the reaction (or lack of same) of NOW and other radical feminist groups to such crude displays. On the one hand, they constantly harp on the evils of men’s degradation of women. So, why the silence concerning such displays as the recent MTV monstrosity? When (Republican) Senator Bob Packwood exhibited indecent conduct toward his female employees, they howled and marshaled the forces needed to oust him from that body (the Senate, that is). So, whence the silence (and even overt defense) over Mr. Clinton’s well documented treatment of women?
Let’s examine the hypocrisy of the presumptive Democrat nominee. Leaving aside his erstwhile support for action against in Iraq (in 1998 and again in 2003), he now flaunts his heroic war record. But during the 1992 presidential election campaign, he angrily denounced former President Bush’s attempts “to use his military record” to get (re)elected, describing same as “an act of cowardice”. Even worse, Kerry had previously joined other Democrats in angrily railing against earlier Republican political ads about the Iraq war and terrorism, claiming that the GOP ads were “attacking (Democrats’) patriotism”. The mantra was, “how dare they call our patriotism into question”. Now Senator Kerry is mute about the current slanderous insinuations that President Bush had, in essence, “deserted” while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War!
On issue after issue – from their obsession with “gun control” as a “solution” to violent crime, to the extension of Roe v. Wade’s first trimester abortions to current support of a truly barbaric “procedure” known as partial birth abortion, to their radical stance on gay marriage, to their support of granting citizenship to illegal aliens who have violated federal law by invading our country – the contemporary Democrat Party is demonstrating to all but the most naïve or rabid among us the extent to which they have strayed from the party of Harry Truman and John Kennedy. Their party has been kidnapped by the ultra radical left which, since the 1960s, has touted an agenda sharply divergent from the view of a majority of American citizens. The term “conservative Democrat” has now become an oxymoron.
All one need do is examine the record. Perhaps the most revealing statement (slip of the tongue?) was made by Senator Edward Kennedy who, after Senate Democrats’ latest “victory” in obstructing a group of presidential nominees, made the totally obnoxious claim that they would continue to block the appointment of “these Neanderthal judges” who are so far “out of the mainstream”. Among those “out-of-the-mainstream”, radical, “Neanderthal” nominees is California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown who was re-elected to her seat on that court by 76% of those extreme right wing, reactionary voters – in California! In 1999, the same Senator Kennedy took to the floor of the Senate to excoriate the “unconscionable tactics of the Senate Republican majority” for “preventing a roll call vote which gives every Senator the opportunity to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’.” He then urged the Republicans “to end this partisan stall and allow the President's nominees to have the vote by the Senate that they deserve”.
Many more examples of the sheer duplicity and utter hypocrisy of the left are readily available to anyone wishing to expose their mendacity to the disinfecting rays of sunlight in the public record. One wonders how much longer it will take the Republicans to muster the courage to do so!
