Only The Insane Go To Washington
By Bob Parks (06/08/07)
During the last few months, many people have jokingly, and not so jokingly, suggested I run for President of the United States. I've politely blown them off. As I believe I am a sane person, I see very little upside to the atmosphere that is Washington D.C.
I was going to write extensively about the miscarriage of justice that was the Scooter Libby “trial”. But it’s really a simple case. This is how I saw things after the verdict was made public….
Liberals: Are ya happy now?
People are actually attempting to capitalize and make millions, while a man who served his country honorably may sit in jail for 30 months. One quite probably, and intentionally, perjured herself while a man who had a memory issue with something he heard years ago will be in a cell.
However, it’s the following excerpt from a Paul Wolfowitz letter to Libby judge Reggie Walton seeking leniency for Scooter….
“I also remember how Mr. Libby offered his services pro bono or at reduced costs…” he was a lawyer “… after he had returned to private law practice - to help former colleagues and friends with legal issues. In one case he helped a public official defend himself against libelous accusations, something that is extremely difficult to do for anyone in public office. The official in question was Richard Armitage, who more recently served as Deputy Secretary of State.”
– Paul Wolfowitz to Judge Reggie Walton, Power Line blog
The official in question was the same Richard Armitage who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to Robert Novak, and proceeded to sit on his ass while Scooter was being slowly sent up the river. Armitage could have gone on all the morning and cable news shows, demanding an end to the travesty show trial. He could have created so much public pressure that federal investigator Patrick Fitzgerald might have to abandon the case: one based on a leak he knew wasn’t performed by the man he was pursuing, so the charge was changed from leaking to perjury.
I watched an interview on Democracy Now! Between a smiling Amy Goodman and an acne-faced reporter, Murray Waas from the National Journal, in which one had to watch two thirds of the commentary before it was admitted that Armitage was the leaker.
AMY GOODMAN: Why don’t you go through for us again, Murray, why you think what Scooter Libby did was so egregious? Go through. Start from the beginning.
MURRAY WAAS: I don’t want to say I think it’s egregious, but I’ll tell you, he was convicted by a jury and he was sentenced today by the judge — pending appeal, of course — but what he was accused of doing was lying to the FBI, lying to — committing perjury before a grand jury and obstructing justice to cover up his role and also the role of perhaps others, including Vice President Cheney, in leaking the name and leaking information about the covert CIA officer Valerie Plame.
Now, how “covert” was Valerie Plame? I’m not sure if it’s okay by the CIA rulebook, but the only covert agent I’ve ever heard of using his “true name” on assignment was James Bond. Valerie Plame is clearly out of her league.
But it was the following exchange that explains the liberal explanation, thus justification, to send a man caught in a process crime to jail….
AMY GOODMAN: Richard Armitage, Colin Powell’s deputy at the State Department, was the first to leak Valerie Plame’s CIA identity, and he did it to Bob Woodward. Why wasn’t he indicted?
MURRAY WAAS: Well, I don’t think there was intent, and there’s a difference. Scooter Libby was charged with perjury, obstruction and lying to investigators about what he did. Richard Armitage owned up to what he did. As soon as he realized what happened, he went to the prosecutor. There was testimony. He didn’t even have a lawyer. He just went in, sat down, told him what happened. Apparently, he gossiped the information away. He didn’t have any intent, or there’s no evidence of intent to smear Joe Wilson, to damage Valerie Plame.
So, according to Waas and the liberal mindset, Armitage (a Democrat?) didn’t mean to out Valerie Plame, so he shouldn’t have been pursued, but Scooter Libby who definitely didn’t let Plame’s cat out of the bag should rot in jail.
According to WizBang in August of 2005, “… Novak suggested he learned Plame’s identity partly from reading Who’s Who in America. A CNN source said a producer had placed a copy of Who’s Who on the set Thursday prior to the taping, apparently so it could be consulted while Novak was asked about the issue.”
Guess who allowed his name and that of his “covert” CIA wife’s name to be published as well? It certainly was NOT Scooter Libby.
The bottom line is this: one would have to be nuts to go and work in Washington D.C. Good people are used and disposed of for the cause of political game. Careers are destroyed while those with power amuse themselves watching the little people flop around inside the fishbowl.
The truth will come out and there is a hell for people like Richard Armitage, Patrick Fitzgerald, Joe Wilson, Valerie Plame and all the liberals who pray (in their own ways) for perpetual vengeance against the Bush/Cheney Administration.
Scooter Libby has no choice but be patient, and so shall we. Patience always pays off in the end.
