Why We Fight
By Doug Hagin (09/11/03)
Two years have passed since the attack by terrorists on New York and Washington DC. Two years have gone by since thousands of Americans were butchered for simply being Americans. Two years are gone and still the hole in the New York skyline brings tears to our eyes and pain to our souls.
Two years since our friends, mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters, wives, and husbands were killed in a war we did not start or want.
Two long, painful years and still many on the political left just do not understand why we are fighting this war. Sure most of them were gung ho about going after the Taliban and Al-Queada in Afghanistan. There were of course those few left-wingers that hate America who opposed defending ourselves but most Liberals saw the need to go after our enemies.
Many Democrats even supported our move against Saddam Hussein, remember many Democrats in Washington voted to allow President Bush the authority to use the military there.
Now though it seems more and more Democrats from Congress to the common folks are forgetting just why we are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, and why we may need to fight elsewhere.
It seems they have let the images of September 11th, 2001 slip from their minds. It seems they have forgotten the horror of that day. Perhaps two years is enough for them to forget hundreds upon hundreds of our fellow Americans dead, killed by those who have sworn to kill Americans any time they get the chance.
Perhaps those Democrats so busy bashing our president for fighting terrorism in Iraq need a refresher course on just why we are fighting and whom we are fighting.
Those who attacked us here, on our soil, know no morality, no decency, and no compassion. They only know hate, hate for ALL Americans. White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Jew, Christian, Atheist, does not concern these sub humans. They wish you and me and all of us to die. Simply put it is a matter of them or us.
We as a nation have two choices. We can either hunt these animals down and kill them or we can do nothing and wait. Wait for more terrorists attacks here. Wait for our neighbors, our families, and our towns to be next.
Our choice is not whether we will fight this war; it is simply where we will fight. We can fight it as we are, with our military, which is trained and armed to fight, or we can fight here. We can see our troops attacked in Iraq, where they are well prepared and are killing many of our enemies and moving towards ultimate victory. Or we can see more September 11th style attacks in Denver, or Houston, or Tampa, or Portland.
Yes it is indeed that simple. Despite the current whining from Democrats about the war in Iraq, we are taking the right course. We have no real choice here. We can stay the course and eradicate the terrorists in Iraq, which our troops are doing slowly but surely, or we can get our troops out and send a message to our enemies that we will run if a few of our troops are killed.
Rest assured the second option would lead to more attacks on us not fewer. Our enemies do not care about anything but killing us. Our troops can defend us, as they are doing marvelously, or we can defend ourselves here on our soil. What choice would the Democrats make? Sadly many of their number would choose the path of cowardice. The same path which will lead to greater loss and pain for America.
No one here in America desires war. No one wants our troops to be fighting. Surely none of us want to see any more of our heroes lay down their life for this great nation. But that is the price of our liberty. That is what our military is for. To protect us from foreign aggressors who would destroy us.
The question of wanting war is not an issue here. We only want peace; all of us want that. But the road to peace is not paved with retreat or debate. In this war on terror it is paved with force, and military might. It is paved with our will to fight our will to pay the price, and our prayers. Our enemies will not stop attacking us. They will never stop looking for American blood to be shed. They do not understand peace, or love. They only understand violence and destruction.
We have a choice; we can allow our military, the best ever to exist, to destroy those who would destroy us. This path will be long, and tough. It will require some of our beloved troops give their lives. But in the end it will end terrorism and make us safer and save many lives here.
Or we can retreat into a shell and buy our heads in the sand. This Path, once chosen, will lead to more war, more deaths, more attacks here. Which way shall we go?
