As The Economy Crumbles Congress Remains In Denial

All 4 of the major contributions to the current financial situation are pretty much lying at the feet of Congress.
1) Congress has mandated that food be redirected to create methanol. Result: higher costs for food.
2) Congress has mandated that most all energy resources in the USA are off limits for usage. Result: energy shortages and higher prices.
3) Congress demanded that people unqualified for mortgages on houses be approved. Result: the sub-prime mortgage mess.
4) Congress has allowed the Fed to destroy the dollar. Result: The price on everything imported into the US is exploding.
All 4 of these problems feed on each other and make the problems more complex.
As each day goes by the situation gets worse and Congress continues to run around making excuses..
In the vast majority of households, food and housing takes priority with transportation coming in 3rd.
As food and housing (energy costs) eats away at their budget, extras just go away. Likewise as the cost of transportation (gasoline) spirals more extras are eliminated.
On the sidelines, government slugs continue to raise taxes further taking away money from the average household.
In the near future more small businesses will fold, fast food operations and restaurants will see their customer base shrink, every business that thrives on sales that are not necessary for survival will slowly close their doors.
Trucking companies are going away daily because of diesel prices. Fat cat governments are going bankrupt due to the costs of fuel and electricity and the shrinking sales tax base.
Unemployment will start to explode and more businesses will lose their customer base. Advertisers will evaporate on Radio and TV, so they will just try to manage to exist.
People with no money to spend don't spend money. A few nuts will try to survive on Credit Cards, but that will be a short lived exercise.
Later this year, we will be well into a serious Recession and hurdling toward the Great Depression of 2009!
Congress can effect a fix of the whole mess in a few days!:
a) Cancel all Ethanol mandates and make gasoline just be gasoline.
b) Exterminate all Federal taxes on fuel and prohibit States and Cities from such taxes for a minimum of two years.
c) Cancel the restrictions on domestic energy production and shut down the EPA.
d) Demand the Fed raise the interest rate to 6% immediately and also state that it shall go no lower than 5%! Or they will eliminate the scheme!
I have no expectation that any of it will come to pass except the Depression.
We are in the same boat that you are, our 2 vehicles once operated a total of ~12 days per week, now they operate maybe 4 days per week and go much less further in each operation. Our weekly outings for prepared food have been trimmed from about 10 to an average of 2. If something ain't on a serious sale offer, it gets skipped.
