Since being a 'Leftist' means being a Communist or Socialist, the phenomenon is problematic to say the least.

Perhaps these self-proclaimed "Leftists" don't understand they are declaring themselves to be Communists or Socialists? On the other hand maybe they know full well and could care less.

In the academic world Marxism is considered the holy grail, our schools at all levels are infested with Socialists of various flavors busy pushing the agenda to students.

It may be in vogue in the elitist circles in the metropolitan centers, but the Americans that make the country actually function are smart enough to know that Communism or Socialism will destroy their lifestyles, social systems and standard of living.

Most of the Communists and Socialists hide behind the label of "Democrat" or "Progressive" hoping the average American will fail to really understand their real agenda.

The Obama machine is openly saturated with Progressives and radical-Leftists, not to forget Muslim factions and other questionable groups.

Many elitists in the MSM aggressively promote and advocate obviously Socialist agendas, however seldom will you hear any of them openly announce they are "Leftists" or "Socialists". Very few, if any of the audience they still have would accept such a declaration. So they announce it among friends, but keep their audience in the dark.

The Leftists think they are on a roll and the USA will soon be become a Socialist haven so many are coming out of the closet.
