Wikipedia(2) attributes this phenomenon to Tim Russert (I have no way to to confirm this). Whatever, the MSM has adopted the scheme.
The reason seems pretty obvious to me. Americans with any lick of sense don't like Communism or Socialism and the color "red" is the favorite color of left wing, communist and socialist/socially liberal parties.
The MSM is saturated with Left-wing Progressive Socialists and anything that will help mask the fact that the Demercrat party is a Left-wing Progressive Socialist dominated group is fine with them.
If you flip the colors in those political maps, it becomes obvious that Left-wing Progressive Socialist states are pretty much a minority. I present such a map below to give you a prospective.
Many of those red dots are major population centers, hoping to eliminate the electoral college so they can take total control of the US Presidency.
Also note the MSM thrives in the little red zones and on a daily basis manages to offer "news" that somehow seems to almost always support the "red' agenda.
