Change doesn't guarantee positive results . . .
By William Bailey (08/22/08)
One of the two major-party candidates for president has as his “slogan”, “Change we can believe in”. It’s interesting to me the numbers of people who have bought into this concept. It’s almost as if people don’t realize that change is always happening.
I am confident of three things pertaining to change: 1) change, like death and taxes, will always be with us; 2) change can either result in positive or negative things happening; and, 3) sometimes there’s very little we can do to determine the outcome.
Take, for example, the “breadwinner” whose job is either reduced or terminated due to downsizing or business closing. I don’t think you could get that family to agree that “change” was a very positive thing.
Or, take the unexpected loss of a loved one due to accident, injury or war. I don’t believe you would find those affected who thought that change was a very positive one.
My point is, simply, change is always with us. However, many times we have no control over the results.
“It has to be concern when a U.S. presidential candidate, whose platform is nothing more than ‘change we can believe in’, is supported by orchestrated chants of ‘yes, we can’. His background and public performance, such as it is, strongly suggests that the ‘change’ he has in mind is nothing less than a transformation to socialism for the United States. What’s worse is his apparent intention to change the United States from a sovereign nation to an obedient member of the United Nations’ global neighborhood.” ( Henry Lamb, “Wannabe president of the world”, August 16, 2008, www. Worldnetdaily.com ).
Mr. Lamb continues, “There is no virtue in change when the change is certain to be toward a socialist economic system that embraces global governance. Change that moves away from capitalism, free markets, private property, strong defense and absolute on the U.S. Constitution is change that must be rejected.”
Having stated that I believe change is always with us, and while I agree with Henry Lamb regarding the changes proposed by the candidate, I will have the temerity to state some changes I would very much like to see happen.
First, I would like to see our Federal government return to operating under, and in compliance with, the document that founded us, the Constitution of the United States. And, my wish in that regard applies to all three branches of government . . . the President, the Congress and the Courts. Until we make the necessary changes in order to do this, we will continue on the pathway to government that does not serve “We, the people”.
Second, and in close proximity to the first, I believe we must return to a system of fiscally responsible and sound government. In order for that to happen, we must get away from the concept that government (at all levels) can be all things to all people.
Next, I would like to see a return to personal responsibility. We have gotten away from the concept of each individual being responsible for his/her own actions. We seem to be operating under the concept that whatever happens to us, someone else is to blame.
Finally, we must have politicians who understand and accept that they are in the position(s) they hold to serve the people. Not the other way around.
As I have stated previously, I believe the election of 2008 will be a critical one. But, I believe the significance of the Congressional elections far outweighs the presidential one.
In conclusion, I do believe that we will have the type of government we, as citizens (“We the people”) are willing to accept and allow to be foisted on us.
