'Sarah Palin's Unwed Teen PG. So What?'
By J. Grant Swank Jr. (09/02/08)
Seventeen-year-old Bristol is expecting a baby. She will marry the father.
That all the more weds the Palins to America’s grassroots, not only today but in previous generations.
The situation is as old as human beings.
Of course, the Bible’s ethic is to keep God’s gift of sex for marriage. Sarah Palin and husband, both born again believers, have endorsed that ethic.
However, as parents worldwide know, each mortal has his and her own free will. Therefore, there are those offspring who decide to carve out their own doings, sometimes not in accord with the Bible.
The Palin family is evangelical is theology. That means that the Bible is regarded as divine revelation, not to be added to or subtracted from.
Being an evangelical household, the Palin family also knows their biblical data enough to understand their God to be a forgiving God.
No doubt when the Palins learned that Bristol was expecting a baby, the family went to prayer, surrounded Bristol with love and security, then rejoiced in receiving divine mercy upon their sincere hearts’ petitions.
I personally know the experience. I am an evangelical pastor. My wife and I have preached and lived out the biblical teachings.
However, when one of our daughters phoned us from afar to say that she, not wedded, was expecting a baby, we immediately showered her with our love.
“Both you and the little one are loved by us, without question. And that love will always be there,” we assured our adult child.
Now we have a most handsome teen-aged grandson whom we would never trade for anything offered in this life.
With the Palins, there are countless families who
have traveled their path. Sadly not all families exhibited understanding love and security. Sadly not all families knew personally the forgiving grace of a compassionate Savior Christ.
However, we as biblical believers everywhere now move in with our own hearts’ prayers for Bristol’s continued good health and the best of God’s futures for her newborn-to-be.
We also thank the Lord for a baby who will not only be surrounded by a mother’s love but a father’s care as well.
Prayers to you all, Palins. Prayers to you all.
