'MainStream?'

The Progressives love to banter about references to the "mainstream". So I decided to try to figure out what "mainstream" might mean.
One description found in WikiPedia: ...the mainstream includes all popular culture, typically disseminated by mass media.
- This is interesting because the mass media is controlled by Progressive Socialists.
Another: The prevailing current of thought, influence, or activity.
Yet another: a major or prevailing trend, as of thought, action, literature, or music
Further searches started to repeat or just return gibberish...
NOTE: For the purposes of this discussion/examination, the term "mainstream media" is not specifically pertinent.
No matter how I twist and turn I can't find a way for the "mainstream" values to reflect anything close to the majority of the actual "American Street".
Obviously, some portion of the "American Street" which is politically illiterate (but allowed to vote?) thinks all the pleasures in their lives are delivered magically as a right by the Government. They seem to support the "mainstream" because it's cool.
My simplistic conclusion is the term "mainstream" refers to the current dreams and wishes of elitists of a Leftist Progressive Liberal bent. General examinations seem to indicate this group represents maybe 10% to 20% of the American population.
When you hear a politician brand someone as "not in touch with the mainstream", just remember who they are talking about...
