Most of us “old-timers” will recognize the above as being part of the lyrics of the Kurt Weill/Maxwell Anderson hit (recorded by Sinatra) “September Song”. The complete line is, “Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few September, November . . . “ And that’s where we are at the present time . . . September, with the days toward November dwindling down when we go and cast our ballots. Not just for the president but for members of Congress. I have stated many, many times that I believe that, while the choice of a president is important, the determination of who will serve in the Congress is of equal or greater significance.
It continues to amaze me at the number who are buying into the rhetoric of one of the presidential candidates. The one who has served just 150+ days in the U.S. Senate and who claims that this qualifies him to be president. Sorry, Senator . . . I believe that facts and reason not rhetoric and oratory should determine how we vote . . . for president and for Congress.
The proposals of the junior Senator from Illinois should scare all of us ! He claims he won’t raise taxes. And that’s just not the case. “To understand why, you need to know something about the “infamous” top 1% of income tax filers: In order to avoid high corporate tax rates and the double taxation of dividends, small business owners have increasingly filed as individuals rather than corporations. When Democrats talk about soaking the rich, it isn’t the Rockefellers they’re talking about; it’s the companies where most Americans work. Three out of four individual tax filers in the top 1% are, in fact, small businesses”. (“If you like Michigan’s economy, you’ll love Obama’s”; Wall Street Journal, 9/13/08; Phil Gramm. If you watched the acceptance speech of the Senator from Illinois, you are aware of the laundry list of what he promises he will do “as president”. But, did you listen closely to what he said ? He claims he can do all of what he wants to do without any increase in taxes and that actually he will lower taxes. How long has it been since a Democrat has lowered taxes ? In his speech, he stated the following: “Now many of these plans will cost money, which is why I’ve laid out how I’ll pay for every dime---by closing corporate loopholes and tax havens that don’t help America grow. But I will also go through the federal budget, line by line, eliminating programs that no longer work and making the ones we do need work better and cost less—because we cannot meet twenty-first century challenges with a twentieth century bureaucracy.” There are a couple of interesting things about what he had to say.
First, I guess he plans to do away with the Congress. (And this is where rhetoric overwhelms reason). Anybody with any knowledge of the Constitution (what’s left of it) knows that it’s Congress that authorizes and takes away “corporate loopholes and tax havens”. While the president might propose it, he cannot do it without the approval of Congress. In the same vein, I don’t know where the Senator has been for the last few years, but when he says that he will “go through the federal budget, line by line, eliminating programs that no longer work”, he must not realize that the Congress has not granted the president the line-item veto yet. It’s been tried, but so far unsuccessfully. Does the Senator not understand that it’s Congress that sets the budget . . . not the president ? While the president can propose a budget, he cannot pass one. Please understand, these quotes are not my words . . . they come directly from the acceptance speech. How can one knowing so little about the operations of government claim to be qualified to be the CEO of government ? For my own poor part, I don’t believe he can.
Throughout the speech the arrogance of “I” comes through loud and clear. It’s as if we will be choosing a king or an emperor instead of one who will serve in a Constitutional office. Go to any number of websites and read the speech. See how many times the claim is made “I” will do this or “I” will do that. Again, are we just going to do away with Congress for four years ?
He claims that, “for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as president; in ten years we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.” In my opinion, it’s just another indication of rhetorical arrogance and total disregard for reality. How can he say that “in ten years we will finally end our dependence on oil form the Middle East” ? Even if (God forbid) he gets elected and re-elected that comes to eight years. How can he say what will happen in ten years ? As I have stated, take the time and find his speech . . . and read it . . . you might just find some surprises that you missed in the delivery in Denver. Now that the Greek columns have been sent back to wherever they came from, it’s time to deal with reality.
Now, I’m not just “jumping stumps” over the nominee of the Republican party either. This election probably gives us the worst two choices we’ve been offered in a long time. That doesn’t mean I’m opposed to Senator McCain, it’s just the way I see it.
Let me go back to the Weill/Anderson lyrics . . . I have taken the liberty of changing some of the words as follows:
“When you meet with the politicians in the early Spring
They court you in song and rhyme
They give you words and a clover ring
But if you could examine the goods they bring
They have little to offer but the songs they sing
And the plentiful waste of time of day
A plentiful waste of time.”

I mean no disrespect by anything I’ve said. I believe the facts will bear me out. If you think we’ve got problems now, what will happen if the junior Senator is elected is unimaginable.
Because of the lack of experience of the Senator from Illinois, I am reminded of the following quotation from Teddy Roosevelt: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory or defeat.” (“Citizenship in a Republic” speech-Sorbonne, Paris, April 23, 1910).
“Oh the days dwindle down to a precious few, September, November; and these few precious days” we have to make some monumental decisions.
