A Review Late But Still Relevant: Windows ME
By Editor (12/09/08)
Today I installed Windows ME on my G3-266 DT Mac running OS 9.2.2 under Virtual PC 4. I bought the Virtual PC 4 package almost exactly 4 years ago and used it today as a "learning" exercise.
Most all of the horror stories I have heard seem to be well founded.
As best as I can gather, it is a bastardized version of Windoze 98 SE with some aspects of Windows 2000 hacked into the OS.
There is no way to determine the memory usage and it seems to be locked into using FAT-32.
The system is responsive and kinda works. Can't find an "Auto Update" feature nor a Disk Management Tool.
I most probably will dump ME and install Windows 2000 on this box. The W2K system is much more useful and offers much more control by the user.
With just just 256 meg of RAM available, W2K will be somewhat starved for resources but will perform well for basic Internet access and simple computing tasks.
