Can America Survive This Attack?
By Jim E. Reames (08/07/03)
This morning I had the opportunity to listen to a talk radio program. The hosts were asking for caller response regarding the appointment of Gene Robinson to the position of Bishop, over the Episcopal Church. I was somewhat amazed of how many callers exhibited a total lack of Biblical fact and at the same time attempted to explain biblical meaning. Of even more interest was that not one ordained minister (from the Boise, Idaho area) seemed willing to call in.
Perhaps they were all tuned to Christian radio stations and are still unaware of the Episcopal vote. I rather doubt that though. The political apathy on the part of America’s ordained ministers is absolutely appalling, when they are the first to challenge believers to walk upon waters of faith and to stand firm regarding things right and pure. They are, most of them, cowards! The only thing most of them seem capable of producing any more are politically correct, touch & feel, sermons. They have grown fat and lazy, comfortable with the tithe and unwilling to stand firm upon God’s written word.
When I was the mayor’s assistant for the City of Caldwell, Idaho in 1995, and when the city council was about to vote on what to do about the Ten Commandments on public display at City Hall, not one local minister had interest or the courage to appear before that government body. When I challenged my own minister about his failure to appear, I was politely told, “I don’t do that, Jim I don’t get involved politically!” His attitude made me want to vomit. And most of our elected officials are just as cowardly, save a few like Joe Lieberman and George W. Bush.
I’d prefer being passionately wrong about an issue than a passionate coward. That is to say, as much as I disagreed with the political stand of Jane Fonda (back in the 1960’s), I did admire her courage to stand for what she believed in, which is far more than I can say for most of today’s ordained ministers and most of today’s politicians. But I still believe she should have been arrested and charged with treason.
It is almost fitting that the news of Gene Robinson was made on this date because August 6th is the anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb, “Littleboy” onto the military and citizens of Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. The Robinson decision is a different kind of bomb, dropped right into the mainstream of American values. Those individuals who represent today’s news media who consider this as being just another news event do not even comprehend the true issues. They do not see that Christianity is under attack. They do not correlate that moral values help contribute to the rise and the fall of entire societies. We Americans are so entranced by the hippy generation lie that “…if it feels good, do it” we are blind to the wisdom of God. The problem with most Americans is we do not truly fear God. I am growing more and more convienced there are few of us who truly believe the Bible as being the Holy word of God.
I totally concur with what one caller, on the Bill O’Reilly program, predicted: That the next major move of America’s liberalism will be a sought-after court decision to strip our churches of their tax exemption status. (That was the subject of my 1992 novel, “Valley of the Dry Bones.”)
If this ultra liberal trend is what we Americans continue voting in favor of, then I feel sorry for the future of this great nation because there is cause and affect regarding any form of moral (or immoral) activity to the success or demise of nations. If this anti-Christian trend continues then we Americans need to get prepared for more homicide; more violence; more incest; more adolescent pregnancies; more adolescent abortions; more domestic suicide; more child kidnappings; and more Amber Alerts. Because of our nation’s dance with immorality I predict larger, more-intrusive, government; more taxes; and far more poverty in our streets. I predict more political conflict; more corruption in government; more unemployment; more wars; more diseases; more terrorist attacks; more indecisive government; more political hatreds; more socialism; more illiteracy; more personal indebtedness; more domestic divorce; more gun control; more police powers; more confusion; more utterly stupid United States Supreme Court Decisions; and more direct conflict of ideas and thoughts.
As a homeland defense analyst (it was the subject of my master’s degree thesis) I feel compelled to ask whether or not the United States of America will survive such attacks on our traditional Christian values. I’ve been a student observer of these trends since the 1960s and things are moving rather rapidly now. Every foundation will be soon shaken. Sides have been taken and the line of difference drawn.
Conversely, I am greatly encouraged with the potential of Mel Gibson’s upcoming movie “The Passion” because I believe it has potential of planting the seeds for true Christian revival on a global scale. The good Lord certainly knows that mankind needs a spiritual revival.
