Line-Up The Christians, Release The Lions, And Let The Slaughter Begin!
By Debbie Daniel (11/05/03)
Open the doors to the coliseum, the lions are stalking their prey, and we´re going to sit in our cozy seats, look down on the arena floor, and watch the slaughter of Christians at the hands of political beasts who are on “the kill.”
As NPR´s (National Public Radio), Tina Totenberg, chief legal affairs correspondent, hatefully said of General Jerry Boykin´s remarks about his faith in God in a church and at a prayer breakfast: “I hope he´s not long for this world.”
Whoa, little lady, does that mean you want him dead? Sure sounds like it.
I guess she´ll be cheering loudest in the arena as the lions begin to devour this man. And no one´s asked her to step down . . . just those calling for the general to be censured and relieved of his position.
If General Jerry Boykin “goes down” for expressing his beliefs inside the confines of a church, we better all pack our bags and get ready for the kill . . . it´s over.
And then let´s march out the Honorable Alabama Chief Justice, Roy Moore who has the “guts” to fight for the right to have a stone placed back in the courthouse rotunda which is inscribed with the Ten Commandments. “Throw the man away,” they say. Let Tina Totenberg call for his “not long for this world.”
But first, why don´t we hand out some “posthumous penalties” to those who´ve gone before, for their own insensitive and offensive remarks.
The whole landscape of Washington, D.C. would look completely different; we would have to tear down the statues, memorials, buildings . . . many of which are dedicated to the honor of American heroes who stated their own Christian beliefs.
But then again, these memorials would have never been erected had any of these men lived today.
General George Washington – after the Declaration of Independence was read to his troops – ordered the appointment of chaplains to each regiment, saying: “The General hopes and trusts, that every officer and man, will endeavor so to live, and act, as becomes a Christian Soldier, defending the dearest Rights and Liberties of his country.”
Furthermore, to his troops at Valley Forge, Washington stated: “The Commander-in-Chief directs that Divine service be performed every Sunday at 11 o´clock, in each Brigade which has a Chaplain. While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to laud the more distinguished character of Christian.”
On May 12, 1779, General Washington spoke with the Chiefs of the Delaware Indian tribe: “Brothers, I am glad you have brought three of the children of your principal chiefs to be educated with us . . . . You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ.”
Ooops! That would have been it for ole George Washington had Democrat, Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, or Democrat Maxine Waters of California been around. Whew! Those girls would have had his hide and today he would be nothing more than the guy who chopped down the cherry tree.
And Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England, wasn´t PC (politically correct) in his remarks about the Nazis in 1940: “The Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States will sink into the abyss of a new dark age.”
How could Churchill be so “insensitive?”
And to General Dwight D. Eisenhower . . . didn´t he know any better than to make such outlandish remarks? D-Day orders, 1944: “Soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force . . . . You will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe . . . . Let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”
Eisenhower should have been hauled off in a strait jacket. And I bet he had his uniform on when uttering these words. Send him to the lions.
And then he had the audacity, in his Battle of the Bulge orders, to say: “Let everyone hold before him a single thought – to destroy the enemy on the ground, in the air, everywhere – destroy him! United in this determination and with unshakable faith in the cause for which we fight, we will, with God´s help, go forward to our greatest victory.”
Thomas Jefferson stated: “I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”
And then to top it all off . . . President Abraham Lincoln issued an order respecting Sabbath Observance 1862: “The importance for man and beast of the prescribed weekly rest, the sacred rights of Christian soldiers and sailors, a becoming deference to the best sentiment of a Christian people, and a due regard for the Divine will demand that Sunday labor in the Army and Navy be reduced to the measure of strict necessity.”
I tell you, I am shocked at these comments. Tear down that Washington Monument, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorial, and I believe there´s a statue of “Winnie” in London that needs to be toppled.
And to think some of these men may have been standing on public ground, in uniform, making these statements of faith . . . not even in the confines of a chapel. Shame on them.
Do we realize how we are all sitting in our cozy seats in this coliseum of life and watching these horrific scenes happen before our very eyes? Are we numb . . . do we not know what to do? What will it take to get us to our feet and demand the end of this insanity of bashing believers?
Or are we going to watch our Christian brothers and sisters marched into the arena, one by one, many of them blindsided by the likes of a surreptitious and eager reporter who carries a recorder into church trying to catch our leaders saying something provocative about their Lord Jesus Christ.
Everything the general said is exactly what any Christian today would attest to as the truth of their belief in the one living God. What´s going on here? I don´t get it.
Our founding fathers would not pass the test in today´s America. Did you know that the Capitol building served also as a church building as declared by Congress on December 4, 1800, and was a church for many decades?
Did you also know that many of the statues in the Capitol are of ministers of the Gospel? Daniel Webster who is recognized in the Capitol both with paintings and a statue in Statuary Hall did not believe that the public good would ever be served apart from Christianity. As he reminded one public gathering “Whatever makes men good Christians, makes them good citizens.” He was very outspoken about Christianity both in private and in public.
Also, did you know that the original Supreme Court, which met in the Capitol, began their sessions with ministers praying for the Court, the jury, and their deliberations?
And one last thought . . . the printing of the first English-language Bible in America was facilitated and endorsed by the United States Congress.
Well, there goes the capitol . . . and it was such a lovely place.
Let me leave you with the words of President Grover Cleveland in his first Inaugural Address to the nation. He acknowledged America´s Godly heritage with these words: “All must admit that the reception of the teachings of Christ results in the purest patriotism, in the most scrupulous fidelity to public trust, and in the best type of citizenship. Those who manage the affairs of government are by this means reminded that the law of God demands that they should be courageously true to the interests of the people, and that the Ruler of the Universe will require of them a strict account of their stewardship. The teachings of both human and divine law thus merging into one word duty, for the only union of church and state that a civil and religious government can recognize.”
So, folks, let the slaughter begin? I don´t think so . . . .
