Chris Matthews, Quit Blaming America
By Gordon Bloyer (04/02/04)
Why do many in the press, like Chris Matthews, keep harping about not finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Why do they keep repeating the lie that weapons of mass destruction were the only reason we invaded Iraq? Why do they keep trying to blame the United States for the war?
The truth is that many Americans wanted to go to Baghdad in 1991. Many Americans would have supported an invasion the first time Iraq fired on our planes in the no fly zone. Many Americans would have supported an attack the first time Iraq violated its cease fire agreement. Many Americans would have supported an invasion when Iraq violated any of the fourteen U.N. resolutions. Many Americans would have supported action when Iraq kicked out weapons inspectors the first time.
The question these naysayers need to answer is, why do they need so many reasons to do the right thing? The very reason we have these terrorist attacks is because of the inaction caused by these complainers. The failure of our government to act has led our enemies to believe that we are weak. The U.N. was a paper tiger because it failed to enforce its demands. Iraq agreed to the cease fire. Saddam knew we could renew the war anytime he violated that agreement. He kept violating the agreement over and over. If 911 had never happened we would still be in Iraq today because we had to enforce the cease-fire agreement at some point. President Bush did not need 9/11 as an excuse. He did not need weapons as an excuse. Only the ''blame America first'' crowd, need so many reasons to act. The truth is that no reason is good enough for that crowd. They would never have acted. They would still be negotiating and Hussein would still be there killing his people.
Who is to blame for the war? We would not be in Iraq if Saddam Hussein had not invaded Kuwait. We would not be in Iraq if he abided by the cease-fire. We would not be in Iraq if he had not kicked out U.N. weapons inspectors years ago. We would not be in Iraq if he had given weapons inspectors total access a year and half ago. Do you get the picture? Saddam Hussein is to blame for the war, not the United States.
It does not matter if we find weapons. Iraq did have weapons. It does not matter if there is a link to 9/11. Irraq did support terrorists. It does not matter if Iraq had links to al Qaida, evidence is that they did.
The United States has done nothing to justify the attack on 9/11. We are not responsible for the Iraq war. The United States is responsible for freeing Europe in 1945. We are responsible for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the Soviet Union, which freed millions of people. We are responsible for democracy in Japan and Germany. We are responsible for freeing forty million people in Iraq. I will take that responsibility. We should be thanked and not rebuked.
Chris Matthews and other critics of his ilk should take a flying leap. Americans are the good guys, not the bad guys.
