Flag Burning: Part II. ''Newspeak''
By Gordon Bloyer (06/23/03)
"Newspeak"
In George Orwell’s novel, ''1984,'' he creates a new language called ''Newspeak.'' Newspeak denies the truth by changing the meaning of words. Today many in our country try to do the same by using politically correct words or by just lying about what words mean or expanding the meaning until they mean nothing.
''Racism'' is becoming meaningless because it is used every time someone's feelings are hurt. Other words that are becoming meaningless are ''homophobic,'' ''liar,'' ''documented,'' ''harassment,'' ''assault weapon,'' and ''speech.'' ''Speech'' has been changed into anything someone thinks he or she should be able to get away with, to express hatred toward our country. Conduct is defined as "speech" by five members of the Supreme Court.
Liberals and ''some'' conservatives define flag burning as speech. Liberals want to make ''cross burning'' illegal. Here is a dilemma: why isn’t that free speech? Some people want to pass national ''hate crime'' legislation. To determine a hate crime, we have to find out what people are thinking when they committed the crime. Another dilemma? Liberals have no problem with this, because the law is anything they want it to be. Some conservatives give in to these crackpot definitions because they are afraid they will be called names.
If we keep following this road it won’t be long before we actually believe that "privacy" is in the Constitution just so women can have an abortion. We will soon believe the 2nd Amendment doesn’t say we have ''the right of the people to keep and bear arms.'' Bill Clinton didn’t have sex with that woman. O.J. is innocent. The Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional. Hillary did not know Bill was fooling around. Tolls are temporary. Greta Van Susteren is good looking. Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, and Tom Brokaw aren’t liberals. Santa brought you those Christmas presents. If you believe the first lie that ''flag burning'' is speech, it is much easier to believe all the others.
