Flag Amendment: Making "The Simple" Seem Complex
By Gordon Bloyer (06/16/03)
Once again an effort to protect our flag by an amendment to the Constitution is under consideration. Once again the liberals are trying to confuse the issue. The liberal tactic is to take something very simple and make it complex.
First we should not have to make an amendment to the Constitution. Liberal judges have forced this because of their convoluted thinking. Burning a flag is not speech, it is conduct. Conduct can be made illegal, thus flag burning can be illegal, only not according to liberal judges. Burning leaves and trash is illegal in many places in the country, but burning a flag is not? We are led to believe that burning a flag is symbolism and it is therefore speech. I would suggest that you burn a symbol of a flag and not a flag.
Here again the liberals engage in obfuscation. They want you to believe that no one can tell a symbol from a flag. What is a flag, they ask? Is it a shirt with stars and stipes, a tie that looks like a flag? It goes on and on.
A flag is a flag. It is made and meant to flown. It is not a shirt, a napkin, a tie, a swim suit, a scarf or any other apparel. If you want to burn your stars and stripes bra go ahead, burn it. If you want to burn a drawing of a flag, burn it. That is symbolism.
Don’t burn a flag. It really is simple. Today too many people are seeking acceptance from the left by claiming to understand all sides of an issue, even when there are no other sides. Some people think there are no simple answers even when they are obvious. They like to sound smart. I’m sorry, you sound stupid. Burning a flag is conduct, not speech, no matter how you wrap it.
