No Wonder It’s Been Referred To As The “Boob Tube”

Normally I don’t give a rat’s patoot about organized sports or the furor the games cause among the lives of the fans. I figure it’s just a version of the old Roman Empire’s “Bread and Circuses” mentality, only this time with advertising and halftime shows, and that sports fans adjust their lives to the degree of their addiction.
If professional sports and the hoopla that surrounds them register anything on my emotional radar screen it’s the disgust I feel towards grown men and women being showered with idolatrous adulation and earning squanderous quantifies of cash for ultimately pointless physical entertainment while our soldiers in Iraq or our US Border Patrol agents put their actual lives on the line for peanuts. Go figure: Our real heroes get diddley while our beefy egomaniacs-on-steroids get the old mazooma.
I refuse to watch idiot commercial TV too so naturally I miss out on a lot of the current cultural bliss over supposedly clever sit-coms, foul-mouthed crime and reality shows, high-stakes commercials, and show-time T&A. Unfortunately, this Sunday’s 2004 Super Bowl halftime show even managed to get my attention after the fact and it has me seething.
Before I tell you the actual incident, keep in mind that in the mid-20th Century the Communist Party in the United States developed a series of steps with which to subvert America into the socialist fold. These goals were actually entered into the Congressional record by Florida representative Albert Herlong, Jr. in 1963. Steps 21 through 26 are especially germane to this essay since its important that America’s best exports to the world should be freedom, democracy, and capitalism rather than debasing, culturally destroying filth.
Steps 21 through 26 are: 21) Gain control of key positions in radio, TV & motion pictures. 22) Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all form of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings," substitute shapeless, awkward, and meaningless forms. 23) Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art." 24) Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press. 25) Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography, and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio and TV. 26) Present homosexuality, degeneracy, and promiscuity as "normal, natural, and healthy."
Now fast-forward to the Super Bowl 2004 halftime show seen worldwide featuring an assault on American culture through MTV degeneracy and pornography. As I already stated, organized sports, like organized crime, does pay and evidently it attracts its share of lowlifes. I don’t care what CBS says as it backpedals but that was an organized exposure of Jackson’s star-burst, nipple medallion breast and a crime against society in that it really lowered the already vulgar public discourse we have to endure.
Listen to the crybaby whine of TV execs, who were caught in their calculated foisting of soft-core pornography during prime family viewing time, “CBS deeply regrets the incident that occurred during the Super Bowl halftime show. We attended all rehearsals throughout the week and there was no indication that any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended.”
Yeah, right. MTV, which is part of Viacom’s organization as is CBS, openly bragged about “Janet’s Shocking Moments” coming up in the show and Matt Drudge is saying that a CBS insider told him that, “The decision to go forward went to the very top of the network.”
Everyone knows all about turning the set to a different channel but if you’re taken by surprise and don’t hit that remote fast enough, the damage is done. Some of us weren’t even watching the game but we all know about it since it’s the topic du jour on the Web. Quite frankly, I don’t want to know what Janet Jackson’s over-supported right boob looks like and I don’t want the greasy-looking Justin Timberlake to sing about doing the exposing. I also don’t know any decent family that would want their impressionable children to see that garbage either. All of us could go an entire lifetime with out being subjected to such crass TV or its after effects and I especially resent the fact that the cretins over at MTV, who got their CBS go-ahead, crowed about this miserable trash like it was some type of artistic statement calling it a, “…kinky finale that rocked the Super Bowl to its core.” Crowed, that is, until the morning after. Now we get a very nervous Justin Timberlake insinuating that it was all an accident by saying, “I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl. It was not intentional and is regrettable.”
Can you believe that “wardrobe malfunction” business especially when it’s obvious that Janet Jackson’s outfit has such strategically placed snaps on the bodice and that her physical “charms” were enhanced with nipple jewelry already??? And you’ll also notice that they’re worried we might have been upset over it rather than apologize for pushing their pornographic agenda in the first place. It’s about time that the sleaze merchants in this country get it through their pointy little heads that the First Amendment does not enshrine pornography as protected free speech. The free speech mentioned in our First Amendment has to do with political opinion, not physical actions. Congress can make NO law, “…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press…”
Even John Kerry found out that filthy language, while it is speech, is still objectionable when he casually used the ‘eff’ word during a Rolling Stone interview. We want our potential political leaders to be respectable, not hip. Political commentators and outraged voters sent Kerry the equivalent of, “Go wash your mouth out with soap.” For the stunt that it pulled at the Super Bowl, I think MTV needs to be sent to the cleaners.
It could be argued that the NFL was just as shocked as its patrons. Their Executive Vice President, Joe Browne, stated, “We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced Halftime show. They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the show. It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime.”
“Unlikely” isn’t good enough. Personally, I prefer the comment by FCC Chairman, Michael Powell, “Like millions of Americans, my family and I gathered around the television for a celebration. Instead, that celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt. Our nation's children, parents and citizens deserve better. I have instructed the commission to open an immediate investigation into last night's broadcast. Our investigation will be thorough and swift.”
