The Boy Scouts, The Constitution And America’s Survival

Four years ago, a few days after the June 28, 2000 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that ruled the US Constitution protected the Boy Scouts of America from being forced to accept homosexual scoutmasters, I wrote:
‘In supporting the Boy Scouts of America's right to the protection of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the Supreme Court in its 5-4 decision appears to have slowed the drive of the radical homosexual community to re-shape the very meaning of "freedom." Nothing is really more disturbing about their efforts in recent years than their determination to deprive heterosexuals of their First Amendment rights.’
Actually, it appears, the decision did not “slow” the drive by the homosexual community to re-shape the very meaning of “freedom.” Instead the anti-Scout lobby speeded up its efforts to re-shape the meaning of freedom in the public mind with a massive, media supported propaganda campaign. The speed with which the homosexual lobby, the feminist lobby, the American Civil Liberties Union and a small group of judicial tyrants have moved to rewrite the Constitution is astounding. And because of the lax media we have, and the fact that most Americans simply have never even READ the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the full-scale attack on the Constitution hasn’t even become an issue of general concern.
The first Amendment to the Constitution states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” If CONGRESS can make no law respecting the establishment of religion, then the COURTS should have no decision that prohibits a citizen from speaking ANYWHERE in public, whether on private or government property, about issues that might be considered religious or ethical.
This past week the legal division of the Department of Defense partially settled an ACLU lawsuit by reminding Army base commanders of existing regulations that prohibit official military sponsorship for non-military private groups (not just Boy Scout troops.) To further its propaganda war, the ACLU reported it as a great victory and warned that it planned to halt the Boy Scout Jamborees on army bases.
The ACLU actually has supported its own VERSION of religion – while funding a propaganda campaign in the media claiming the exact OPPOSITE. The net result of this, however, it to finally wake up many people who have not paid much attention to this attack on the Constitutional rights of Boy Scouts. The ACLU and media propagandists who oppose the Constitution, with the aid of tyrannical judges, have managed to deprive hundreds of thousands of boys in poor neighborhoods the opportunity to go to Scout camp and caused many boys to fear wearing their Scout Uniforms or discussing their scouting activities for fear of being persecuted. Many brainwashed Americans now believe that the Boy Scouts are “discriminating” against others by upholding the Scout oath in which they promise to do “duty to God” and to be “physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.”
Well, of course, the Boy Scouts of America is not an organization to join if one does not believe in God, and has no desire to be “be “physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.” Of course, people who don’t believe in God don’t usually join Churches where believing in God is doctrine. For example, in my 25 years as an agnostic, I belonged to the Unitarian Church which doesn’t cater to those who believe in God. When I changed my beliefs, I changed my church affiliation. I didn’t try to persecute Unitarians or force them to agree with me.
Yet today the ACLU and homosexuals are determined to persecute Boy Scouts to force them to change their belief in God, physical and mental fitness and morality. That is not only unconstitutional, it is also absurd.
In fact, I think the anti-Scout bigots have gone too far and they have waked up the American public. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has introduced the “Save Our Scouts” bill that “stipulates that no federal law, including any rule, regulation, directive, instruction, or order, shall be construed to limit any Federal agency from providing any form of support to the Boy Scouts of America.”
Sen. Frist’s action introducing a bill to save our scouts, comes four years after my son, Gavin Grooms of Provo, Utah organized a non-profit organization called “Save Our Scouts.” In 2000, writing to explain why he thought it necessary to raise money to replace funds lost as the United Way in some areas caved in to ACLU threats, Gavin wrote:
“Groups who are against the Boy Scouts and what they stand for are pulling out all the stops - from legislation to picketing to gathering signatures to booing Eagle Scouts holding the American flag on stage at the Democratic convention. To justify their immoral lifestyle they will try to destroy every organization that is contrary to theirs. Boy Scouts today, religions tomorrow, the Constitution last.”
“To summarize, people who are attracted to each other should not be sleeping and camping together. Being "morally straight" is no premarital sex, no actions that would be inappropriate for a young man and gentleman. And sleeping in tents with people who are attracted to each other is inappropriate. History has shown that a great society that becomes immoral inevitably falls and what's left is loss of freedom and great persecution for those who are left.
“Help us stop the decline of our society. Help us save our young men. Help us save the boy scouts. Sign the petition to save the boy scouts. Tell the people in Washington enough is enough. Tell them that parents across the country are trying to teach their children principles that will keep them healthy and happy and supporting the Boy Scouts is a great tool in their efforts.”
I would never have believed that, in four years, the anti-Scout propagandists could convince so many Americans that supporting morality is contrary to the Constitution! Today the Constitution is literally hanging by a thread. Contact your senators and congressmen and demand action not only to Save Our Scouts, but also to Save Our Constitution and our free nation.
