Merry Winter Holiday To All
By Randall Nunn (12/08/04)
We are into the silly season now, with the liberals out spreading winter holiday cheer to all and insuring that no one uses the word “Christmas” except behind closed doors in the privacy of their own homes. Lest anyone think that the liberals and radical leftists are going quietly, just look at their actions after having suffered one of the worst election defeats in modern history.
They are all over the networks lecturing us on tolerance, open-mindedness and multiculturalism while doing everything in their power to denigrate the historical and religious traditions of the majority. The liberals believe that their loss in the recent election was a temporary setback because they still control the mainstream media, the academic world and Hollywood. And until conservatives wrest these institutions from liberal domination, we will never be able to openly and freely express our values without fear that the political correctness police will accuse us of being bigoted, uncaring and insensitive.
We should all reflect and take stock of our culture and values during this holiday season. Admit it—we all hesitate when choosing cards or stamps and wonder if others will think we are insensitive if we have a card, stamp or display that says “Merry Christmas.” We celebrate Hanukkah, Eid and Kwanzaa openly and by name, but you better think twice before using the word “Christmas”! Is that sick, or what? And millions of us take it and go on with our daily lives without making an issue of it. By doing so, we give the forces of socialism and anti-Americanism another victory and implicitly suggest to the weak-minded that maybe we ought to back off and mute our Christmas celebrations in order to be more understanding and not offend anyone.
If you go to the post office, you will see stamps advertised that have the words “Hanukkah” (2 each), “Kwanzaa” (2 each) and “Eid” on them, but instead of Christmas it is “Holiday Ornaments” or “Holiday Music Makers”. There is one stamp that has the word “Christmas” on it, but you probably have to ask for it in a plain brown wrapper so as not to offend some unbeliever standing in line behind you. One would think that the majority of Americans would be entitled to celebrate the holiday using their preferred symbols and words without being made to feel guilty about it. But that kind of independent thinking needs to be suppressed by the anti-religion zealots who want to stamp out any traditions or beliefs that emphasize the individual or spiritual power.
In the minds of most liberals, all good in this world comes from enlightened government and the masses must be made to realize that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness come from government, not the creator. If modern-day Americans believe that all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, then how can they show proper respect for the power and beneficence of government from whom flows all manner of worldly goodies such as Social Security, Medicare, housing, food stamps and so much more? This adherence to a belief that government is not the source of our liberty makes religion and the free exercise of it a threat to all leftists who must rely on the coercive power of government to impose their will on the rest of us. To liberals, those old-fashioned ideas espoused by our founding fathers are outmoded relics of a simpler time when people didn’t know any better.
The liberals were smug and secure for many years in their belief that the media, the academic world and the entertainment industry could readjust the thinking of the younger generations and bring about a collectivist majority in this country that would use government coercion to bring about a better life for all, even if individual liberty must suffer in the process. The 2004 elections were a shocking blow to liberals, but rather than trying to understand what those elections represented, the hard core leftists are more determined than ever to find ways to undermine that victory and gain control by using power that is not subject to the control of the voters in “red” country. The ACLU, activist judges and attorneys, leftist millionaires like George Soros, special interest groups, Hollywood, Michael Moore, the academic community and leftist radicals will continue their campaign to re-make America into their image of a perfect society.
Conservative Americans must continue to be vigilant and confront falsehood and hypocrisy whenever and wherever they appear, in the spirit of the season and with good cheer. We have slowed the liberal tide and shown the left in this country that they have not duped as many as they had thought. So, be comforted in the results of the last election but know that there are battles ahead, such as judicial confirmations, which are critical to the well-being of the republic. We can enjoy the winter holiday and count our government entitlements, but it just won’t be as joyous as wishing our fellow citizens a Merry Christmas and counting our blessings in the spirit of the season.
