The Real "Danger" Of Christmas
By Charles Cole (12/24/04)
Have you noticed that this Christmas season seems to be the climax of a multiyear assault on religion in America? If a store puts up a simple “Christmas tree”, not to mention one with an angel at the top, the ACLU threatens to sue and the owner (or company) usually cowers under the legal threat and removes the “offending” object (be that a tree, a baby Jesus, a crèche, or even a “Merry Christmas” sign).
As with so many other ultraliberal causes, the “movement” begins with minor, almost subtle changes to longstanding traditions – changes which seem at first glance to make sense and don’t appear “radical”. But, as the Roman poet Virgil noted centuries ago, “The road to hell is an easy one”. Liberals who decry any conservative interpretation to 4th Amendment protections from unreasonable search and seizure (even when they benefit recidivist, career criminals), continually cite the “slippery slope” which such narrow, strict interpretations of this area of law would represent (in their eyes).
Interestingly, they see no such “slippery slope” in their own attacks on religion and religious activities which they view as dangerous. Heaven forbid we should allow those “dangerous” Ten Commandments to be posted in a school! The poor, empty-headed children might be bamboozled by the slick, snake oil salesmen of the “religious right”. Better to have them indoctrinated with “progressive” ideas from the far left, such as reducing the age of consent to European standards, i.e. to age 12, for people who wish to engage in sexual activities with adults. No danger there. Nope. Just purely progressive enlightenment.
The anti-Christmas hysteria is but a reflection of the anti-Christian mania sweeping the bastions of the far left (i.e., the “mainstream” media, the trial lawyers associations, the teachers’ unions, academia and the Michael Moore wing of the Democrat Party). The left’s hysterical reaction to the results of the November election is instructive. They cannot comprehend how it was possible that 51% of the American people voted for the shallow, religious (codeword for “bigoted”) George W. Bush. Did people not see that the worldly, highly educated and philosophically superior John F. Kerry represented the attainment of the bright future the left has been promising since the 1960’s?
Did the voters really believe in constant, immutable standards, such as those given to man by God? How could they be so primitive? Such “progressive” Blue Staters seem to feel that celebrating such things as traditional Christmas will somehow threaten their right to not believe and not participate in religious activities. Never mind that the overwhelming majority of the founders of this country were deeply religious men. Never mind that the system which they designed and implemented has from its inception paid due homage to the Creator and to His eternal truths (e.g. the Ten Commandments). And never mind that this same system has for over 200 years steadfastly defended the right of all people to worship (or to abstain from same) in accordance with the dictates of the individual’s conscience. No amount of irrefutable, conclusive, or dispositive evidence will ever convince our “progressive” friends that their religious “slippery slope” is, simply put, a fantasy.
No, the real “danger” of Christmas lies in the fact that so many of us are refusing to bend to the will of the tyranny of the minority and buckle under to more of their silliness. The line seems to have been drawn at Christmas. It is a national treasure in this country. So, the thought police of the left might as well back off this one. I suggest that they just take a deep breath, relax, and have a Merry Christmas!
