Checkmate!
By A.M. Siriano (01/31/05)
The liberation of Iraq—a long, heroic quest that cannot be squelched by liberal losers and nadiric naysayers, is becoming a bona fide reality today, and I couldn’t be more thrilled unless I were Iraqi. Today—whether all goes well or not—is a great day for Iraq and a great day for America.
People who think otherwise need to go back into their holes and eat worms. The rest of us can stay above ground where the sun shines brightly on freedom.
The press was largely silent when this happened in Afghanistan. Those of us who cared followed the story anyway. We remember well the old men crying, the young women marching, the people—brave, joyous, appreciative—casting their votes for the first time. We knew it was a monumental success, an immense historic event.
The media dogs and liberal rats ignored Afghanistan’s first election. They cannot ignore Iraq’s. It is too big. They have longed hoped for its failure, but that in itself has made it impossible for them to refute its significance. This is huge, folks, so don’t miss it. Don’t let negativity allow you to miss it.
What I say next, please do not take as vulgarity, because I mean it as literally and sincerely as possible: To hell with the naysayers! They deserve nothing less than damnation for their hypocritical, hate-filled, bigoted attitudes. I am sick to death of sick-souled people who look at every mishap, every mistake, every rock in the road, as signposts of utter failure. I am sick to death of people who claim to “support our troops,” but assure them that their sacrifices are for naught.
But I won’t dwell on the naysayers; better to rejoice with the Iraqis. I rejoiced with them when they threw shoes at images of Saddam. I rejoiced with them as they took to the streets in Detroit after the tyrant’s statue fell. I rejoice with them now as expatriates vote—an important, symbolic statement of solidarity that has encouraged their homeland families and friends to boldly march to the polls. I rejoice with them today as they dance in parking lots, waving their colorful flags. I rejoice with Iraq because there is no other valid response.
And think on this, too. Imagine what Saddam is feeling right now. Imagine his inner torment, his frustration, his gall. If that makes you happy, your soul is healthy. If that makes you even the slightest bit sad, you are one of the dogs of the earth.
I saw a poll the other day purporting that a majority of Americans would not vote if they had to risk their lives to do so. Don’t believe that for a minute. Americans who say that have never been under the thumb of a tyrant who rapes the land and kills her children. And even in more fortuitous circumstances, the denial of voting rights by thugs would send Americans into a frenzy of indignation.
Mark my words. As it was in Afghanistan, where people braved terrorist threats to exercise their newfound liberty, so it will be today in Iraq. Regrettably many civilians may die in the process—and more soldiers—but such is the price of freedom. Despite the very air itself charged with negativity all over the world, this is no catastrophe, no quagmire, no stalemate. This is checkmate.
