On The Culture War
By Jon Alvarez (02/15/05)
As the culture war in America wages on, with the latest front in this war being the college campus, it’s important to take note of how far we’ve come in a relatively short time. With the horrific events of 9/11 serving as a wake up call, our country has seen a tremendous upswing in nationalistic pride.
We are experiencing a resurgence in patriotism and love of country not seen since World War II. Modern day patriots, no longer willing to remain silent with regards to the direction our country is headed, now seek to alter that course. Ideological differences are at the heart of this struggle. While some in the liberal media claim that no such struggle exists, we can just ask Janet Jackson and CBS what they think. Americans have awoken to see what the forces of liberalism have done to our culture and have drawn a line in the sand.
Liberals in America do not share the same beliefs and attitudes about our country as we do. While conservatives have faith in our country and believe her to be an instrument for good in the world, liberals all too willingly place blame for the ills of the world on her shoulders. Liberals see America as an oppressive country, despite the fact that people die every day trying to move here. No other country exists where an immigrant, arriving with nothing, can achieve all that he or she desires. No doubt about it, America is still the land of opportunity. It’s telling that some liberals appear so willing to move to Canada or elsewhere because they fear this resurgence in American pride and patriotism, like that’s a bad thing.
Liberals also tend to live in the past in order to perpetuate the cult of victimhood amongst minorities. Have you noticed that while mainstream American society now judges a person by their character and ideology, liberals tend to do the opposite? Liberals are the only ones keeping the discussion about racial differences alive as the rest of us have moved forward. A perfect example of this has been taking place at Syracuse University. I attended a panel discussion on the “role of the university” within society, with the panel being comprised of five white and wealthy college presidents. One president expressed guilt and personal responsibility for the plight of urban Blacks. It was quite a snapshot into the mind of a liberal as they took the elitist position that it was their role to represent those they deem as underprivileged and downtrodden. How elitist and out of touch with the mainstream in this country. For some reason, liberals just don’t grasp the fact that it’s personal conduct and ideology, not race, which not only defines but also limits each individual in today’s America.
Liberals are also dangerous in that they fail to recognize that we live in a post-9/11 world. We must act upon perceived threats in order to preserve and protect the nation we all live in, lest we all perish. When the U.S. exhausted diplomacy at the U.N. to neutralize the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, liberals felt this was not enough and chose to stand against America. When the U.N. refused to enforce its own resolutions, thus forcing the U.S. to take action, these same people took to the streets to protest. By their words and actions, liberals in America emboldened our enemies abroad, stood in defense of the regime of Saddam Hussein, and opposed the liberation of millions of the oppressed in that country. Throughout the war with Iraq, we’ve come to realize that bad news for the U.S. is good news to them and vice versa. While harshly critical of Abu Ghraib, liberals have been mum on the numerous beheadings and car bombings which have claimed the lives of numerous innocents purposely targeted by the terrorists we fight. Apparently, they live in some kind of demented, parallel universe devoid of the ability to discern good from evil and fact from fiction.
The good news is that liberalism has suffered great losses on many fronts under the advancement of this patriotic juggernaut. Hollywood was one of the first casualties as many celebrities failed to take notice of what happened to the Dixie Chicks when they took a contrarian position to mainstream America. We’ve witnessed the careers of leftists like Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Barbara Streisand, Janeane Garofalo, and Alec Baldwin take a serious nosedive as these movie stars aligned themselves with the anti-war leftists who marched in support of our enemies. Apparently Hollywood has gotten the message as they felt the pinch in their purse. Imagine the backlash Hollywood would have faced had they nominated Michael Moore’s treasonous Fahrenheit 9/11 for Best Picture. It would not have been pretty.
Liberals in the political world have been greatly marginalized as Republicans are now firmly in control of all branches of the government. The Democrats continue to implode faster than Howard Dean as their party has now decided to be lead by…Howard Dean. Of course, being represented by the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy didn’t help matters, either. While they failed miserably in their campaign to get Anyone B. Bush elected as president, they proceeded to ignore Senator Kerry’s advice afterwards to put aside petty political differences and come together as a country. They certainly make C-Span more entertaining to watch, though.
The United Nations, held in such high regard by the left, comprised of dictators and terrorists, has also suffered greatly as it has been thoroughly discredited as an institution worthy of any merit. The U.N. Food For Oil program, designed to provide humanitarian aid to feed the people of Iraq while that country was still under sanctions, did just the opposite. We’ve since learned that many of those at the U.N. who opposed the actions of the U.S. did so because they were receiving bribes from Saddam Hussein, thus keeping food out of the mouths of the starving. Despite this, liberals refuse to acknowledge wrongdoing on the part of the U.N. nor concede that our country did indeed, do the right thing. Liberals would still cede control of U.S. foreign policy to this corrupt body politic. In other words, if liberals had their way, Saddam Hussein would still be in power, the children of Iraq would still be starving to death, Uday and Qusay would still be in charge of the rape rooms, and the mass graves would still be getting filled. Some humanitarians, those liberals.
The ascent of Fox News, the Internet, and conservative talk radio also signals another victory for conservatives in the culture war. The media elites have suffered greatly as a result of their liberal bias in reporting the news. CBS suffered the brunt of this as Dan Rather came under fire for his malicious attacks on the National Guard service of George W. Bush using phony documents. The conservative movement in America has been fueled in large part by the ability to get fair and accurate news and information from a wide variety of sources. Liberals, of course, hate and despise Fox News as they see it as a symbol of the conservative revolution in America. In other words, you and I are too stupid to be able to discern fact from fiction and are being fed right-wing propaganda. Of course, they fail to concede that Fahrenheit 9/11 is full of fiction and mistruths as well.
The latest front in this culture war is taking place on the college campus. Long a stronghold of liberal ideology as many Vietnam War era hippies sought sanctuary there, patriotic Americans are now turning their attention to what is being taught to our children at these institutions of “higher learning”. For some time they have enjoyed relative autonomy as they indoctrinated our youth with their self-loathing, anti-American ideology. The latest controversy involving Colorado University professor Ward Churchill serves to illustrate and highlight this. It appears Churchill has long been preaching the liberal line that America is an oppressor nation and got what she deserved on 9/11. Only now, thanks to the above-mentioned flow of news and information, are Americans taking notice.
Obviously, Churchill is not the only professor on college campuses with this attitude. Robert Jennings at the University of Texas is another such America hater. Seems Professor Jennings would like to see the “American Empire” crumble. It will be interesting to see in the coming months and years how universities will deal with these kinds of people. Hard-working American families and taxpayers footing the bill will no longer tolerate this kind of ugly and hateful rhetoric. Churchill and Jennings will learn, just as many in Hollywood did, that with free speech comes great responsibility. While they are free to preach their hatred of our beloved country, they are not free to do so on our dime. It’s also time to seek out and support conservative, pro-American educators as they struggle to overcome oppression and intolerance of their views on these same campuses. Perhaps it’s time to bring back loyalty oaths?
Recent events must make it embarrassing to be a liberal in America today. Of course, that would be the case if their moral compass was not so warped and perverted. How can one group be so wrong on so many things? As the world bore witness to dancing Iraqis at the polls, purple fingers, “The Hug” at the State of the Union Address and subsequent liberal criticism of such a sincere moment, and even criticism of President Bush’s inspiring “Freedom Speech” at the inauguration, it’s no wonder the term “liberal” is fast becoming the new four letter word in America! The history books will not be too kind to liberals as it will be recorded that they stood opposed to the removal of a murderous dictator who supported terrorism and the subsequent liberation of millions of people now embracing their first taste of democracy.
So, as we continue to do battle with liberals attempting to undermine American culture on several fronts, from gay marriage to broadcast indecency to the removal of any public tribute to God, we must remain vigilant and willing to fight. We must not let up as we continue to take a strong stand against the anti-American agendas of groups such as the ACLU, ANSWER, and MoveOn.org. The liberal movement in America is fast becoming marginalized to the point where even Senator Hillary Clinton is trying to distance herself from its taint in her run for the presidency in 2008. As peace and democracy spreads in the Middle East, as President Bush pushes forward with his agenda to preserve and reform Social Security, as he works to protect American culture from internal rot, as he continues his efforts to de-fang the terrorist state of Iran, and as he deals with the consequences of Madeline Albright’s appeasement of N. Korea, we must not let down our guard. Liberals have long had their chance at the helm of our society and look where that’s gotten us. Now it’s time for us to clean up their mess and prevent them from making more.
