Will American Sovereignty Be LOST At Sea?

Our beloved, honest, freedom-loving U.N. is at it again. This time they are trying, in one full swoop, to garner the wealth and power they have only previously dreamed of. Sad thing is, they may actually succeed this time. How will they accomplish this? Through a little known, and rarely reported on treaty called the LOST Treaty.
The LOST Treaty purports to give the U.N. control (read sovereignty) over international waters. Big deal you say? How could this possibly affect our sovereignty? Well imagine this: by giving the U.N. power over international waters they will essentially be able to regulate transportation, drilling, and fishing – just to name a few.
Of course this could not possibly affect the majority of Americans right? Wrong! Imagine the next cruise you take. Think there will be any additional taxes imposed on that ticket for passage on international waters? You betcha!
Okay, so you are thinking what is a little extra tax on a trip that is taken infrequently, but it will not stop there. Do you like seafood? Oh do not worry about those little extra taxes that will be passed along to you the consumer, think about the regulations that will be imposed on the fishing industry. Certainly these companies will have to obtain permits, which based on recent U.N. actions with oil for food, will certainly will be allocated fairly. Furthermore, it is safe to say that the “environmentally conscious” U.N. will impose strict limits on the quantity of fishing allowed and presumably the techniques used. Did I mention what will happen to the price of oil with new transportation costs, regulations on drilling, and the like? So what does the LOST Treaty spell for Americans? Lost jobs and higher prices.
Still not convinced the LOST Treaty is a bad idea? What about our military? If the U.N. controls the seas will they be able to regulate our navy’s movements? Will the U.N. through the Kyoto Treaty mandate certain emission standards on sea traveling vessels? Or will they just impose confiscatory taxes every time our troops are deployed?
Now what exactly will the U.N. do with this new found windfall? Certainly they will spout-off about using these funds to help out third world dictators, err countries; in other words, more socialist redistribution of wealth at the expense of the United States. Of course that is assuming the funds actually make it to those countries and do not take a detour ala Iraqi oil for food. However, this is an optimistic approach. We have heard for years about the creation of a U.N. military. Today a U.N. military, tomorrow a U.N. armed with nukes. Do we really want an American-hating body like the U.N. to have their own military, possibly with nuclear capabilities?
But have no fear; the Republicans will save us from this dreadful treaty like they did with the Kyoto Treaty right? Sadly, the truth is that Republicans are staunchly in favor of handing this power over to the U.N. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has voted 19-0 in favor of it and the rumor is that President Bush is itching to sign it.
Unlike Reagan who dismissed this very treaty, we can no longer expect our representatives to look out for our best interests. We must contact them and explain in all certain terms that an affirmative vote on their part for this treaty will equal an affirmative vote on our part for their opponent in the next election. No longer can we vote blindly for one party, believing that they will protect our liberty, we must become vigilant and continuously hold their feet to the fire. I realize that it is much more fun to watch a ball game or go out with friends, but freedom requires responsibility. Please contact your Senators and tell them to vote no on this power grab by the U.N.
