Go Ahead And Shut It Down Harry!
By Dave Gibson (03/17/05)
Sen. Minority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) threatened effectively to shut the Senate down, if the Republican majority exercises their right to change the rule on filibusters. Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) is expected to lead the fight to lower the number Senators needed for a filibuster to 51--a simple majority. This change has been needed for quite some time. It would bring back majority rule to the Congress, and put an end to government gridlock...Of course, today's Democrats are against anything that makes sense.
This is the so-called "nuclear-option" that we have been hearing about. It will only be enacted because the liberal Senate Democrats have been refusing to give an up-or-down vote on several of Bush's judicial nominees. The Democrats have lost the House, the Senate, the White House, and the majority of state legislatures. Their only hope to further their leftist agenda is the judiciary.
We have seen time and time again, our votes being rendered meaningless due to the deeds of liberal activist judges. This nation desperately needs judges who make rulings which strictly adhere to the U.S. Constitution. It is a judge's duty to interpret the law of the land--not to change it.
The Democrats stacked the courts with these activist judges during the Clinton administration. Clinton placed more federal judges on the bench than any other U.S. President, with 367 appointments. Those Clinton appointees have an incredible history of changing laws that impact all of us and actually make impotent our elected officials.
So Sen. Reid is placing partisan politics before the business of the country...What else is new?
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) responded to Reid's threat by saying: "When the American people realize that they are threatening to shut down the government because we want to restore majority rule in the United States Senate, I think it's going to backfire on them terribly."
Cornyn went on to say: "If we don't do this (lower the filibuster rule to 51), I think those people who gave us the large majority and re-elected the president are going to think we have been ineffective, and you know what happens to people who voters think are ineffective: They get unelected."
I look forward to the move. It will not only bring about a much needed change and thus put forth the will of the people, it will also force into the light of day--those Republicans who should declare themselves Democrats. There will undoubtedly be a few Republican Senators who will vote against the so-called "nuclear-option."
So go ahead Harry and shut down the Senate. If that happens the one many are calling the "little Daschle" will face the same fate as the former Senate Minority Leader.
The Democratic Party has among other things, become the party of obstructionists.
