Are Republicans In Power Or Not?
By Dave Gibson (04/27/05)
Republicans control the House, the Senate, as well as the White House. However, they behave as if they are in the minority. It is past time for our President and our Republican Congress to stand up and be counted.
For more than a year, we have been hearing threats from the right over use of the so-called "nuclear option." Apparently, they are empty threats. If our Republican controlled Congress to gives in yet again to the Democratic minority, we must ask ourselves...Why do true conservatives continue to vote for Republicans?
Bill Clinton flooded the federal judiciary with liberal activist judges. If an attempt to legislate from the bench is made--it is a safe bet it came from a Clinton judge. The Clinton judges are made up largely of under-qualified, left wing activists. They are tearing this country apart at the seams. They frequently hand down decisions which present an assault upon the family and traditional values. They ignore the law in favor of leftist agendas.
President Bush has eight years to make a difference, by placing men and women upon the federal bench who will adhere to the Constitution. We desperately need conservative judges who will restore order and sanity. However, Bush is running out of time.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has been threatening to enact the "nuclear option," as it applies to the confirmation of judicial nominees. This ominous sounding action simply means that a nominee would only need a majority vote, rather than 60 votes to receive confirmation.
Contrary to what the Democrats would have us believe, a simple majority is all that is necessary. The ability to block a judicial nominee without having a majority in the Senate, was never provided by the Constitution. It was not what the founding fathers intended, nor do I believe that even the mythical Mr. Smith could have envisioned such absurd gridlock.
Despite Sen. Frist's tough talk, we are now hearing of a deal in the works with Sen. Minority Leader Harry Reid. The Associated Press is reporting that the Democrats are offering to confirm two of Bush's blocked nominees, in exchange for the Republicans abandoning their plans to put an end to judicial filibusters. However under the compromise, nominees Priscilla Owen, Janice Rogers Brown, William G. Myers III, and William Pryor Jr. would not be considered for federal judgeships.
The Democrats have blocked several of Bush's nominees because many Democratic Senators see the conservative judges as a threat to their only means of legislating. Republicans hold both houses of Congress, the White House, the majority of governorships, and most state legislatures. Americans have finally begun to stand up and be counted. When Democrats could no longer make laws as legislators--they turned to the federal bench.
If we end judicial filibusters, President Bush will be able to place conservative judges not only throughout the federal judiciary but upon the Supreme Court. We must flood the courts with conservative judges who will interpret the law and not make the law. We are tired of watching activist judges ignoring federal and state laws in favor of the homosexual, abortion, and affirmative action agendas.
It is the duty of a judge to enforce community standards, as set down by our elected representatives. At some point, the left began to see federal judges as pseudo law makers. Liberal activist judges have become mini-dictators. These judges are accountable to no one, while they make sweeping and often harmful decisions (as we recently saw with Roper v. Simmons which granted amnesty to dozens of death-row inmates).
We must inundate our elected officials with phone calls, emails, faxes, and office visits. We must tell our Republican Senators that we will not accept anything less than an end to the judicial filibuster. If they choose to ignore us...they can look for work elsewhere. There simply is no point to electing Republicans who act as if they are Democrats.
Conservatives flooded the polling places last November because they wanted action. Period. We do not want to see the Republican majority making deals with the Democratic minority. Period.
