Possible Senatorial Opponent To Clinton Has Website 'Wiped'

William Brenner, who is seeking GOP approval to run against Hillary Clinton in 2006 had his website sabotaged. The exact date is not specified although an FBI investigation was launched July 19th.
Campaign spokesman David Brenner stated they have no indication of who the attacker is however this has cost them a weeks worth of email, donations and website traffic.
This type of crime is not new to the IT industry. Many sites are hacked this way every day of the year with little, if any recourse attempted by either the hosting company, or the customer. The cost of investigation versus the effect of capturing the responsible party do not equate to a reasonable trade off according to hosting company owners. A large percentage of the people committing these acts are under the age of 18 or across international boundaries. While the U.S. has international agreements in place to respond to such acts, unless it's a catastrophic event rarely does it attract any action or public awareness.
People use scripts that have been written by professional hackers. They exploit parts of a web server through known vulnerabilities. Once access is granted the hacker has complete control over the website and in many cases the entire server, which may host serveral hundred websites. These scripts are most common because they can be run by anyone. There's very little knowledge required by the user. They infect a machine and hide all of its processes. Then it installs its own applications to perform actions not visible to the site, or server administrator.
